I recently bought a new router, an DSL-AC56U. This in response the wireless section of the old router having stopped. The new one will also be able to cope with the increased speed if and when BT put in fibre to the box in our street.

Since then I have been unable to upload zips or complete a scheduler request. Strangely despite one glitch which led me to think the problem remained with the old router, on trying again now in desperation, I find it does work.

Other projects seem not to be affected. Does anyone know of any settings on the new router I could try playing with to try and resolve this?

Edit - have started getting transient http error before files finished uploading.

Edit2: Have also sent email with all router settings to ASUS

When I was recording digital cable TV and playing it back over the LAN, I found strange things happened unless I disabled flow control on my PC's LAN adapter (an Intel I217-V). In Windows, that is accessed via Device Manager, and then the "advanced" settings for that network adapter. Sometimes other things, such as "Interrupt Moderation" needed to be disabled. Now that I no longer do such recording or playback from my PC, the problems have disappeared.

Have you checked for new firmware updates, see what might be in the log of your new router?

As partner's windows machine warned of possible vulnerability in router, I updated the firmware the day I installed it.

Nothing leaps out at me from the logs but I probably need to do some research to find out what everything in them means. I don't have any streaming services or recording of stuff over the system so that isn't the issue.

Edit: zips now uploaded using old router and cable. Will wait to see what happens next time around.

Hi Dave

Perhaps you could try some of the BOINC trouble shooting options, and see if they show anything. Also "Ping" and "Traceroute". They'd have rather short times if they stopped at the router, but who knows.

Thanks Les,

Will have a look - other projects work fine - I enabled another project specifically to check this out though none of the other projects I have tried have uploads anywhere near as large as CPDN.

Well, that gets to .ja.net, (Janet), the network used by the universities, so that's OK.
And you can send to other projects, so not a general BOINC matter.
If they're getting returned with the old router, then probably not a server storage problem. Although you can never be sure, with the huge amounts of data being returned these days.

Is there a file size option in the settings?

Files for batch 711 were 35 megs, and 64 megs for 709.

What is the setting of the MTU size?

MTU is 1492 which is the default for this router.

Edit: Have reduced it to 1462 and reduced TCP MSS Option to 1422 as router tells me it must be at least 40 less than MTU and won't let me save the settings without changing this.

Still not updating project, no zips to upload at present will play further when I do.

More settings fiddled with after swapping to old router to send three zips. It hasn't broken my connection so will try again when next zips are created.

Below is log output, failed upload on new router, then connecting cable to old one when it succeeds. Unless I am being really blind, I don't see any clues. Next step is to install WINE on laptop and see if it suffers the same problem with CPDN.

Having put wine back onto laptop, using new router it managed to attach to the project but same problems updating and unable to download any work. I will check to see if the same happens with uploading zips but I expect it to be the same. Currently downloading tasks using the old router and a cable.

It is beginning to look like the new router has bad buffer memory that affects large uploads and downloads. It may not be a problem on small files.

One more thing to try; a cc_config option:

<http_1_0>0|1</http_1_0>
Set this flag to use HTTP 1.0 instead of 1.1 (this may be needed with some proxies).

Dave Jackson -

1) On you old router, did you try resetting it to the "factory settings" to see if the wireless starts working?

2) I am not clear on your setup, but have you thought of using your old router for what it does and your wireless router for what it does in a "home network".

Yes, tried a manual reset of old router.

Interestingly, my old netbook today managed to download a task and seems able to update normally. - This was a hadcm3s task on Linux. So it seems the problem may only be with WINE. Don't know if that gives anyone any clues?

Dave - Shooting in the dark here.

Are you trying to use both routers simultaneously (like I mentioned in a previous post)? If so, there are some things you could check which I won't waste time writing if your answer to my question is no.

I don't think it's possible to use 2 routers at the same time on the same telephone line - unless the technology has changed. (I once tried 15 years ago - it took a very experienced BT engineer a couple of days to find out it wasn't possible.)
One can obviously use WiFi & cable from the same router.
Do you get the same problem with both WiFi connection & cable?
