For additional information:

There are a few known, outstanding problems with BOINC 7.8.2 on the next versions of Windows and MacOS which are currently available for public and insider testing. As a result there is continuing additional BOINC testing and development underway for these yet to be released versions of Windows and MacOS.

A new version of Windows 10 called "Fall Creators Update" (Version 1709) will be released by Microsoft on October 17th, and the next release of MacOS called "Mac OS High Sierra" (Version 10.13.X) will also be released soon.

As a result, expect a new developmental version of BOINC (7.8.3) to be made available before too long to address fixes with the new Windows and Mac operating systems.

Expect to see a 7.8.3 "bug release" development version of BOINC shortly for Windows and Mac OS. This will be followed by a 7.9.x development release with additional features.

Note that the BOINC development team does not differentiate between "alpha" and "beta" pre-release versions. When a new version is deemed close to being production ready, it is posted on the download site and marked as "development." Some of these development versions are subsequently moved to the "recommended" status if no serious problems arise.

Hope this helps. The BOINC Download site remains the same:

Yep. This is the one that will solve the boinc connection problems after task crash. "client: eliminate possible buffer overflow in reporting result errors". Now to somehow get this into all the Linux distributions...

The Mac OS Development Version 7.8.3 is also now available.

The Mac version includes changes that will enable the screensaver
to work with the latest Mac OS 10.13 (High Sierra).

This will require BOINC projects to rebuild their graphics apps.
It is believed that SETI@home plans to do this in the next few days.

There is some work underway to get Version 7.8.3 into a Linux release. I realize there are many potential Linux versions...I will try to get more information.

Jim posted this in Linux section and it worked for me too.

This works for me:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:costamagnagianfranco/boinc
sudo apt-get update

https://launchpad.net/~costamagnagianfranco/+archive/ubuntu/boinc

Then, you need to do a software update, then search for BOINC in the Ubuntu
Software Center, and install it. It will be the latest (i.e., 7.8.3) version.

In fact a sudo apt-get upgrade after the update installed it. But I understand some might be wary of adding repositories they know nothing about.

Put it on my laptop two days ago and it is running okay.

Will upgrade my desktops as eyesight permits. (I hope it solves the strange [unrecoverable] lockups experienced a few times recently.)

Laurence Field, Linux release manager for BOINC has posted the following:

"The BOINC client v7.8.3 is available for testing on Linux

For Debian/Ubuntu
sudo apt-add-repository ppa:costamagnagianfranco/boinc
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install boinc-manager

For Fedora/RedHat/CentOS
sudo dnf config-manager --set-enable updates-testing
sudo dnf install boinc-manager"

The link below may help locate the code, since the team has not updated the regular BOINC Download Site...I am asking the developer to do that...

I notice that distrowatch no longer includes BOINC in its list of packages to compare versions across distributions. This is a shame as it would be a quick way to check when 7.8.3 becomes standard on the major distributions.

I don't know if there is any other source of this information?

Dave -- I'll ask the Linux release manager about distrowatch. It would also help if the current and development versions for Linux were updated on the BOINC Download site. It doesn't look this has been happening for quite some time....so I'm also asking the development team about that.

Thanks. I haven't looked at distrowatch for some years so remembering BOINC versions being listed may be showing my age.

Here is a list
of BOINC versions for Ubuntu. It seems some more recent versions are not available for earlier distros. I'm with 14.04 LTS, but I can only go as high as 7.2.47 (backports). So it will be nice if the Linux version gets updated and backported.

I have just updated to Artful but as Artful is not a long term release, many will wait till 18.04 before upgrading. At that rate it will be a long time before the majority of those using Linux will by default be on at least 7.8.3 to get round the problem of crashes on tasks with large numbers of trickles wiping out the BOINC installation. I am starting to play with Gentoo and if that goes well, may end up converting all my boxes to it but I will probably want to run it on a box for a few months in order to assess it before making the switch on everything.

Dave Jackson -

Say I update to 7.8.3 on my LINUX computer(s). I still won't get work from CPDN as long as there is a complete hold on sending LINUX work will I?

Does, or will, CPDN detect my BOINC version and send me work?

So I am thinking, why bother to update to 7.8.3.

@WB8ILI -- Yes, that's probably true...this new release doesn't change how allocations of CPDN work units are occurring by OS platform.

However, if you are processing other projects, the new BOINC release does fix some ongoing problems....

I don't know if the BOINC server code allows task allocation to only a certain client version or above? This would seem a logical way around the dearth of work for Linux/Mac clients.

Just for the record I can confirm that upgrading to ubuntu 17.10 does give you the 7.8.3 client without having to add repositories.

I believe there is an option to specify a minimum (and maximum) client version server side.

What would be nice is if they could build 64 bit Linux apps rather than sticking with 32 bit. Most of the world has moved on from 32 bit and Linux isn't the best at 32 bit compatibility.
