Message 63693 - Posted: 14 Mar 2021, 11:14:16 UTC - in response to Message 63691.

You have'n' a clue about the subject matter, have you?
I have an honours degree in Physics, so yes I do. I also have a sense of humour and an open mind.

OK, care to describe how a negative pressure (as an absolute value rather than a relative value) would work or is that an example of your humour?
Same way as electron holes in semiconductors, antimatter, etc, etc. Just because we haven't discovered it yet doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

You cannot have a lower pressure than an absolute vacuum in the same way that you cannot have a temperature lower than absolute zero. It isn’t a case of we haven’t discovered it yet - the scale stops.
The scale we currently use. If you lived back when the earth was flat, going right round would seem equally insane.

So explain how it is physically possible to have a pressure lower than that of an absolute vacuum or a temperature lower than absolute zero.

Back when the Earth was flat ignorance was rife, nowadays we actually understand physics and can set the scales appropriately.

Pressure is off topic for a project about climate? [facepalm]

No, we understand more. There will be things we still yet don't know. To assume we know everything is arrogant.

The title of this particular topic is "new work discussion". Batches of new work do sometimes produce errors if the parameter boundaries are being pushed and it might be appropriate to discuss those as errors. There are people here who know more than might be expected about the science of climate but most of us don't, so such a discussion might be better located in a separate thread since people concerned about new work will learn little about new work and may indeed find the information they do want obscured.

The "invalid theta" error, if I remember correctly, relates to a variable called "potential temperature". There's a helpful Wikipedia article at Potential temperature.

Overnight, another hadcm3 crashed with invalid theta so two out of 14 I have had in this batch. Sadly I can't see if these tasks will do the same on other computers as the other attempts have crashed right at the start, one missing libraries and the other a Mac with a failed process creation message.

And another one to report - task 22025705. Error message is

NEGATIVE PRESSURE VALUE CREATED tmp/pipe_dummy
, with the final part hidden off the edge of the screen.

Yes, I know that a negative atmospheric pressure is a physical impossibility, and that simply proves that the climate pattern being modelled isn't going to happen in reality. Strike those initial parameters from the list of possibles. Talking of new work - that particular workunit was created on 26 Sep 2019, but the initial task (created the same day) is marked 'didn't need'.

That batch is something about: Optimisation_2060_spectral_runs

Failure is 71%
Hard fails (all the re-runs) is 2%
There's still 1754 running
With 866 (12%) unsent

So, interesting all round.

And apart from any resends, by tomorrow morning it looks like all the hadcm3 work will be gone.

For reference, on my Ryzen7 in testing the HADSM4 tasks took a tad under 55 hours to complete. No particular problems noted but as always with a new model type if you do spot anything strange let us know and we can pass it on to the project.

Hi Les.... Damn, I haven't gotten any tasks in a Martian year, maybe a Saturnian year. How can I get some jobs? There are jobs available on the server.

Sending this from my present location: Ballooning over Greenland watching the glaciers melt.

Thanks in advance

There were 3 research groups doing some work that used a Windows based climate program. They all "disappeared" early last year.
Those that are still active, are doing a different type of research, and these programs are written for Linux.
So, all of the work on the site is Linux.

Although, now and then, someone is sending us some work that also runs on Macs
There's a few of these at the moment.

And the thing to keep in mind is, that all of this BOINC stuff is NOT part of their normal work; it's something additional that they've learned about from conferences, and are trying.
Finances and servers and net access permitting.

I found my laptops had switched on their turbo-props. The Taskmanager going haywire. The temperatures in cloud nine. Checked the Task Manager, I had fifteen WU's running on a twelve thread machine. Switched of Virtual Box, still twelve tasks? Opened up Boinc Manager and I found twenty-three Windows WU"s. Managed to mark project "No further tasks" just in time. Well, I suspended the Windows Tasks because the task in my VB is at 92% and has already errored out several times.
Stuck. My VB's have tasks. I would like to know what others are going to do. I cannot be the only one.

My little Windows10 box, that normally has nothing else to do since income tax season is over, just downloaded 5 tasks. I do not run virtual box, just the straight OS. This is one of the tasks I have on that machine.

wah2_eu25_s05o_209112_13_913_012094589_0

The Boinc client is running four of them, and three Rosetta tasks. I do not know if my machine will even do TurboProps.
