Oh dear, you've left yourself wide open there. :) :) :) Come away from the dark side. Walk towards the light... the light... the light... The latest version of Linux Mint, (18), has just come out, with an updated Cinnamon desktop. (Cinnamon looks a lot like Windows XP, so it's easy to get used to.) Then you can run Wine on top of that, with any version of "Windows" that you want to. And M$ won't know that it's there. The installer is easy to use: insert the disk, re-boot, and pick an option, ranging from "I never want to see MS stuff again, so get rid of the lot of it", to dual boot with Win 10. |

Thanks for your response, George 0000 to 2400 is the 24-hour clock I wish we used. Unfortunately, M$ set-up option, as I interpreted it, forced the times in my experiment. (Forced choice, one to start in AM, one to end in PM. No AM-to-AM or PM-to-PM times possible. No "00" hour choice offered and no 'minutes' choice -- minutes are shown but not malleable.) Before encountering the limitation of the new "control" option, I considered a one-minute 'open' period in trying to control the beast but figured M$, being what it is, would likely use that one minute as an invitation to start their process during that minute. They are looking only for a start time -- ASSUMING that our machines are not continuously active -- hmmm, I wonder how many people keep their machines running whenever those machines are to be idled for 2/3 of a day. (Someone at M$ knew about this project, given that some M$ money went into development of the first regional model [PNW]. Or so it was noted at the time.) Not enough corporate memory, eh? M$ approach to Win10 maintenance demonstrates the corporate attitude vis-a-vis customers and corporate control. Nice try, Les! I bailed out from Linux when the one box I kept in M$ (so I could help deal with participants' problems using that OS) became more stable than Open-SUSE. Thereafter, I tried most known Linux versions (even Yoper, built to be fastest of the lot). Finally gave up and contributed to Billy Gates' billions -- and to all the other M$ billionaires and millionaires --> that is NOT a brag. Given that I'm little more that two months from my 80th birth anniversary, I lack incentive to return to an OS with promise. And promise. And promise. And more promise ... Besides, I probably lack sufficient brain synapses to undertake a relearning program for an OS with its feet still deeply rooted in the DOS era (though I hope overlying layers improved over the years I was away). Meanwhile, I retire to my foxhole to await 'incoming'. Thanks for the chuckle, Les. Hi, Tullio, Thanks for your comment. Glad that you didn't lose any work. The only machine I checked, so far, survived M$ machinations with all four tasks surviving. That is not always true. Thanks for hanging-in with CPDN all these years. Appreciated. Good for you! Best regards. Hi Jim I'm just a day short of 74, so a long way short of you. But Mint, at least, is a piece of cake these days. A lot simpler than the last Windows that I used. (7?) There's a couple of questions to answer, but they're simple. (I think they're about which keyboard to use - UK or USA, and another one.) And if you run Wine, it's a bit tricky to install, (you need to use a special program, and not the one labelled "Install.exe". Or something like that.) but easy to use. To get to the Windows stuff, click Start, (the same as Windows), then Wine, and then Browse C:Drive. After that it's just a matter of where you put things, the same as with Windows. I think that for anyone who's about to install a fresh copy of any Windows, it would be worth the time and cost to look in newsagents for Linux magazines with a dvd on the cover with Mint and try it. November is Mint month for most of them. I found a Summer edition of Linux Format with it. After a brief look around, remove it and install Windows. Anyway .... |

Happy 74th, Les! Reading your praise for Mint, I perceive Mint to be an ounce or two short of a full "piece of cake." I tried Wine years ago, found it to be well short of useful. To have called it "problematic" would have been too kind. Its development curve had no where to go but up -- or the bin. US keyboard? Not sure what that is. The two I use, one on each of two KVM switches, differ from the one on my laptop. Anyway, I'll continue to grouse about M$ and Win10, try to find ways to tame the beasts, and consider changes, desirable though they may be, too much trouble --> I'm too old to consider "changing horses in the middle of the stream". I feel your pain over the lost tasks - the same thing happenned to me a couple of weeks ago on one of my machines. I wasn't until I checked my tasks on my account page and found a couple of "error while computing" comments that I knew anything was wrong. If I remember correctly in the original Win10 you could have the option of "notify when updates are ready/available". That I think has now disappeared though you might be able to "notify when a reboot is required". Try setting the working hours to something like 1:00am to 12:00pm on both the OS and BOINC. It might work. It's all down to MS wanting to make sure that updates are installed as many in the past probably didn't check and update as often as they should have done. BTW Happy birthday Les. |

“Using” the devise is usually determined by things like keyboard or mouse activity. I have had MS put the machine to sleep with 4 Climate models crunching away. It thinks the machine is not doing anything because no one is working the keyboard or mouse. |

I am using this procedure on three Win10 computers and it is working great for me - Go to Settings -> Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Services Stop the Windows Update service Then, Disable the Windows Update service. NO MORE UPDATES! You do have to remember to occasionally reverse this process to update your computer. However, you can do it when it is convenient for you. I waited a month before installing updates (about a week ago). It took about 1.5 hours to download and install on each computer. |

I've just hit the ultimate issue with WIN10. A laptop with it on came to its end of life. Screen became detached from the body with fractured hinges, and it was underpowered anyway, so I decided to help it to its termination point. But of course, I had personal data on it. My usual preferred method is using DBAN to obliterate all residual data. That refused to load. I then tried the innate WIN10 method of resetting the OS with all user data removed. That resulted in a continuous loop, trying to load Windows, which went on for 10 hours before I stopped it. Finally, I unscrewed the machine and took out the hard disc which is now waiting for me to take it outside and hit it with a hammer. That will teach it. |

my method for erasing data on windows machines is to install Linux on the drive/partition I wish to erase. |

Good idea, Dave Jackson. I'll try it next time. |

In case some haven't come across this yet: Windows 10 – Disable automatic shutdown after Windows Update It's from late July, so a bit old, and may have been obsoleted by more recent scheming. |

In case some haven't come across this yet: Nice googling Les. Thanks. I don't have any Win10 crunching PCs yet, but eventually I probably will. Hopefully this type of workaround will continue to work. |

Just to make sure I understand... This will allow updates to be downloaded and installed, but will prevent the auto-restart. Is that correct? |

Thanks, Les. However, I'm not sure it is a good idea to use it. Yesterday, I spent several hours slogging through things offered via Google. Most of the time was in M$ online "help" topics. There was another option in one conversation. Immediately following was a comment by someone affiliated with M$ -- I forget his title but it wasn't moderator -- which said stopping updates invalidated the license. Don't know if the comment applies to this option but it is obvious from reading M$ defensive replies that M$ is wedded to its concept of keeping ALL devices fully updated and in parallel. So, caveat emptor ("let the buyer beware", if my long-ago Latin is correctly remembered). I've just looked at doing this on 10PRO and I think it has been obsoleted as it looks as if the option has been removed from the Windows Update controls. |

If these re-boots don't occur while a user is "logged in", (using keyboard or mouse), then perhaps this is a good excuse to build a new toy. Either a beam engine to constantly press a key, (shift key?), or something to move the mouse around. Possible hardware are Meccano or Lego. Hobby shops may have an already built beam engine that could be used. |
