I play safe and suspend any tasks on BOINC and shut it down before doing any updates. I have had the occasional bad update that hasn't rebooted and had to go back to before the update was installed. |

So far I had mo problems with reboots. It is easier to deal with Windows than with Linux which runs on 2 computers, a HP laptop and HP minitower, running SuSE Linux 13.2 and 13.1 respectively. Tullio |

The problem is CPDN. It is notorious for being touchy about interruptions, suspensions, and stoppages. If a Windows shutdown catches it at a critical moment, such as when it is writing to the disk or creating a zip file, it is likely to crash. Other projects seem to be more tolerant. |

I suspect the problem with CPDN is mostly to do with larger file sizes and possibly more frequent writes making it more likely that one of these crucial operations is going to be interrupted. |

For what it's worth, the message in the "Update Reserved" window indicates that we'll be informed when it's possible for each machine to be upgraded. If it is as slick as the move from Win8 (ugh!) to 8.1, it should be quick and easy. (Prudence, however, strongly suggests we stop CPDN/boinc and make backups to a removable device or remote machine before proceeding with the upgrade.) Its not the initial transition form Win7 to 10 that Im worried about, its the monthly (or possibly more frequent) updates. If they arrive with no prior notice then there could be trouble with unplanned reboots causing crashes. Loosing hundreds of hours of crunching because Microsoft decided I needed this update NOW is a risk that I would prefer to be able to control. |

I've come across this post about the upgrade. When 'Free' Windows 10 Becomes Expensive, You Must Know This At the bottom of the 2nd page is a link to this: Windows 10 Release Date Leaks, Free Upgrades Explained And near the bottom of page 1 is this link: Why Microsoft Announced Windows 10 Is 'The Last Version Of Windows' |

Lots of reasons there why I will remain defenestrated. |

From what I can make out on the Win10 pages only the Home version will have updates automatically installed. The Pro version will allow you to choose between automatic and manual updates. But I could be wrong. Home versions of Win7 and 8 will only upgrade for free to the Home version of 10 but the Pro versions will upgrade tp Pro. The bad news is for Enterprise versions which don't get the free upgrade. BTW my son is upgrading his machine to Win10 shortly so I will have more info then. |

Q: Can I clean install (i.e. boot from media and install) Windows 10 on my Windows 7 or Windows 8.x device and still take advantage of the free upgrade offer? A: No. Clean installs of Windows 10 on a Windows 7 or Windows 8.x device via booting from media are not considered upgrades, so the free upgrade offer will not apply. For your Windows 10 installation to be considered an upgrade, you must start installation of Windows 10 while booted in Windows 7 or Windows 8.x If you attempt to clean install Windows 10 on a device that hasnt taken advantage of the free upgrade offer and successfully activated Windows 10 online before, you will be prompted to enter a Windows 10 product key to continue installing Windows 10. http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_10-win_upgrade/free-upgrade-to-windows-10/a1906d5c-2183-4064-af8e-e6650c15d96d?auth=1 Apparently when Microsoft says "upgrade", they mean it literally. That is so awful I will just buy the OEM version and be done with it (but not anytime soon). |

for what it's worth there's also a large discussion about the pros and cons of upgrading to Window 10 at SETI@home number crunching here: http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=77121 |

I just upgraded to Windows 10 and it was surprisingly easy and painless. I was running Win7. It was run as a giant update. It only took about 2 hours and I didnt have to reinstall anything. Even Boinc and CPDN came through without the need to reinstall the software and then do a restore from the backup copy you usually have to do. I have not found any programs that dont work right or need to be reinstalled or updated. This is soooo much better than the days of moving from XP to Vista, when many existing programs didnt work and even older hardware needed to be replaced. I see no reason to wait. |

Has anyone else noticed that the models seem to be taking about twice as long to run with Windows 10 as they did with Win7. Hadcm3s WUs that took about 43 hours to complete running Win7, seem to be taking about 90 hours under Win10 on the same machine. |

Perhaps more aggressive thermal throttling? Just guessing. |

Hadcm3s WUs that took about 43 hours to complete running Win7, seem to be taking about 90 hours under Win10 on the same machine. I had Win8.1 before i did the Win10 upgrade and i haven't noticed any change in run time. I even had tasks that were mid-way through completion when i did the upgrade and they carried over and completed without errors or complications. I noticed no difference in their progress or run times. But again, that was going from 8.1 to 10... |

I upgraded from Win7, never ran Win8 in either of its forms, and I think I am seeing a BIG slowdown. If is continues and I cant find a way to undo it, this would be enough to make me revert to Win7. My RAC has dropped 600 points (AND IS STILL DROPPING) since the upgrade. |

More info on the slowdown. Running on Win10 the hadcm3s WUs are presently progressing a just over 1% per hour of crunching. This will bring them to completion in approx. 90 hours. Under Win7 this type of WUs routinely completed in 42 hours. Thats about a 65% drop. I am presently researching the procedures for reverting to Win7. I think Win10 is about to get the old heave-ho. Its a good thing it didnt cost me anything. |

Perhaps a guide would be the Seconds/Timestep numbers for the 2 OS. |

JIM wrote: I upgraded from Win7, never ran Win8 in either of its forms, and I think I am seeing a BIG slowdown... Curious... I just happened to get a hadcm3s on a PC that I recently upgraded to Win10 (from Win7). I noticed how quickly it was running and wondered if it was different than others. Anyway, it finished earlier to day in about half the time previous shorts had run on this machine. Task 18759757 is the WU in question (I hope that's a public link). Is something amiss? |

Perhaps a guide would be the Seconds/Timestep numbers for the 2 OS. On my Windows 10 PC and 2 anz models I am getting 5.xxx s/timestep. Yes,the tasks are running slowly but I am running also vLHC@home, ATLAS@home, Einstein@home GPU and CERN Summer Challenge on my A10-6700 CPU, 20 GB RAM because of Atlas. Tullio |
