Really have to point out the chicken/egg situation here. It is really hard to stay enthusiastic about, and recommend, a project that apparently doesn't want the support of Mac users.

Agreed, Kind of pointless.

From what I read on our old defunct PHP board 3-4 years ago, the professional climate physicists use Linux on servers to run this software from the UK Met Office.
And they're the ones who create the data sets that we run for them.

To be brutally honest, I feel that's it's a waste of time for most crunchers who use Macs to hang out at this project in the hope that some tasks will be released for them. Far better to look to other types of research.
Although for those with a Mac that they don't mind leaving running 24/7 to pick up maybe half a dozen climate tasks a year, then go for it.

I heartily recommend VirtualBox. Using VB you can create a 32bit Ubuntu guest OS and then run all the Linux work units without trouble. I have run CPDN that way in Windows and also in 64bit Ubuntu.

Nice final run for my old Mac mini to finish on, here. Updated BOINC now and El Capitan next. All it needs is some ANZ models to check whether everything's tickety-boo.

I have VMWare Fusion on my Mac with Windows 7, so started running CDPN tasks there. It seemeed a good way to keep crunching.
Does anyone know how VirtualBox compares with Fusion? I'm about to go to El Capitan, so would have to buy the latest version of Fusion.

Only what I have read in reviews. Floating point there is very little difference between the commercial offerings and the free one. Disk writes are a lot slower with virtual box and graphics suffers a lot, many benchmarks not completing but as CPDN is mostly floating point I would guess there is little difference.

There are some HADCM3N available for Mac at the moment - I got two. Nice long models which, if memory serves, don't like to be interrupted. So if you can leave your machine on permanently then these may keep it occupied for a while ...

[Edit: I also notice that BOINC Manager 7.6.12 reports the time remaining with days, which is a nice refinement.]

Sadly a version of boinc that does that isn't there for Linux yet. And as Ian says, they don't like being interrupted. My relatively slow desktop is estimating 74 days for these. Probably not worth even trying if you switch off every day.

Just came to the forum to ask - will there be any more WUs for Mac/Linux? If so, is there an ETA?

A glance at server status page suggests that CPDN has sadly gone Windows-only. :-\
(No, I'm not going to run BOINC in wine/VM)

There's no information available about this, other than work for different OSs will be/might be available from time to time.

It does seem that all of the current research at the various climate centres is about "Attribution studies", and they seem to like the options that are available to them in the new variable run length WaH2 modelling program.

There is a faint glimmer of hope for a Mac version of some of the other climate apps.

However, don't hold your breath, or wait up for it. It could be a long way off.

Dave: Do you know if these are ANZ/HADCM3N? I've got my Mac set to ANZ/HADCM3N-only to reduce the number of messages, but should clearly widen the range if these are beta tests of other applications.

The "beta" these days is in-house, so nothing will show up here.

Downloaded two WAH2 models, a PNW/24 and an EU/13. That machine only runs one at a time and has only 2 GB memory but it seems to be running fine so far.

Good news that Macs have some work again.
