Please report the false positive to Avast. These instructions might help you report it.

Unluckily at the office I had the exact same problem with a africa WU downloaded and brought in the machine via USB key (no way to have Internet access for boinc on that machine), but I have no access to Symantec antivirus setup, all is locked on this machine, also I can't run any setup, so I have to run an old 6.10 boinc version that I can use mobile (no setup).

So the exe was not copied and obviously the task failed right away :-(

This last week, I too have been getting antivirus blocking to auto downloads from AVAST Antivirus Free.

As an example, it reports the issue for as Infection: FileRepMetagen [Malware]

Will play with partners win8 machine in next week to check this out I thought it was still possible to exclude the selected folders from scans? However this still means micromanaging BOINC by not letting it download new work except when you are able to temporarily turn of the AV for the duration of the download and then turn it back on again. Also as noted, report the false positive and if enough people do that they will improve the definitions file.

The only answer here is to avoid that model type for the moment.
