Hi,

Today received an email from climateprediction.net team which states....

"First of all can we thank you for your ongoing contribution to the climateprediction.net project. Our records show that you are currently running the BOINC client version 7.2.39 on host number 1314000. Unfortunately this BOINC client version has been very recently shown to cause CPDN workunits to crash prematurely. We kindly ask if you could please update your client as soon as you are able to, to BOINC client version 7.2.42 where this issue has been rectified, this is available from".

I'm currently running version 7.2.47 since 27th March. I was on 7.2.39 from 25th Feb. to 12th March, then 7.2.42.

Do I need to down grade to 7.2.42?

Regards
Ian.

The email refers to your host 1314000. According to the host details page, it's running version 7.2.39. It doesn't look like that host has had any work for over a month, so you might have missed it in your list of computers (click the All computers link to see all of them, not just the active ones).

I agree with ritterm's assessment.

However, this host (http://climateapps2.oerc.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/results.php?hostid=1302316), is crashing all the ANZ models. It may be a corrupted file or something else. What I would do is set no new work on climateprediction.net, let the EU models finish, then do a project Reset. That should remove any dodgy files and give that PC a chance to finish future ANZ models.

Thanks.

Have set it to "no new tasks".

Will look into the 1314000 issue.

I also got the email a few days back. My one and only computer running boinc is on 7.2.42.

I see on my computers page that it's not had any contact with climateprediction.net since back in February but I can assure you that it's up and running other projects quite happily. I'd wondered why it's been doing nothing from your project but not got round to investigating. It is however on the latest version, so what can I do to get it working with your project again?

There could be several reasons... In your BOINC manager, are you attached to CPDN? Is CPDN suspended or set for no new work? Is its resource share set to zero or much lower than other projects you're running? What messages do you see in the BOINC manager when you do a project update for CPDN?

Hello,

The computers 1314000 & 1319073 are the same machine. I'm not sure how or why these two are there. But it looks like when I upgraded from 7.2.39 to 7.2.42 something may have gone wrong.

According to this website my computer hasn't been in touch with HQ since 25th Feb this year. I notice in boinc that it doesn't seem to be fully connected.

Here's what the event log says - seems it doesn't have my computer ID also, so I guess it isn't connecting. I restarted boinc and it seems to confirm that it's failing to connect just to climateprediction?

@SMURLEY: It does seem that something strange is going on. Your computer ID at Rosetta, 1645070, belongs to user "StephenCWLL". At SETI, your computer ID 7087377 belongs to an anonymous user. I'm not sure how it all works, but I believe database mix-ups can result if you use different user ID's and/or email addresses at different projects. Perhaps that has something to do with your problem here at CPDN. Hopefully, one of the admins or mods can shed some light on this for you.

Well, I'm baffled :) It could well be that things have got confused over time as I spent some time away from boinc and then had to remember all the accounts I used to be with when I started back up again. Then there's been a re-image of my computer.

StephenCWLL is my userID. I use that with boinc. In here I have the smurley ID it seems, which is also obviously me :) Name shouldn't matter as long as I have the credentials to login?

I think I need someone who understands all these accounts better than us both because I need help :)

When I search for that user ID here at CPDN, I don't find it. You could try detaching from the project and then re-attaching, using the option to create a user account with the ID "StephenCWLL".

[edit]Sorry... I think I mean create an account with the same email you use with your other BOINC projects. Then you can edit the account and make the user ID StephenCWLL.[/edit]

There is a merge facility in BOINC, which can reduce the number of spurious hosts. If you look at the details for one of your computers (e.g. 131400) and click on the 'merge' link at the bottom of the page then a list of potential merges will be presented. It isn't always possible to merge separate BOINC hosts that are really the same physical machine but the merge facility can usually reduce the number of duplicates somewhat.

If successful then your old hosts, with the defective BOINC Manager version, should disappear and you won't be caught up in any repeat of this BOINC Manager version trawl. However, even if the hosts can't be merged then a problem only arises if a current host has been embargoed so that no new work can be downloaded. As far as I know, embargoing a non-existent host doesn't matter, since it wouldn't be sent any work. (Though a BOINC expert might know better.)

Confused :/ I only ever use the same email account with any of my boinc projects.

Well, then perhaps that's not (or wasn't) the issue. You've got a task now, so maybe there's no longer a problem. Happy crunching! :-)

Smurley

There are 2 parts to attaching to projects that need to be the same for ALL projects:

1) The email address. This is what is used to identify people and their computers TO A PROJECT.

2) The user name. This is what is used to identify individuals when searching THE EXTERNAL STATS SITES.

************

If you create multiple accounts on a project, because the email address is unique, (which is why it's used in the first place), these accounts can NEVER be merged later when you discover your mistake.

************

If you use a different user name for each project, when a ststs site is searched using the persons name, you can only find the name for the project where you used that name.

So, for 3 projects, each with a different name:

A uses Fred
B uses Tom
C uses Peter

When you search a stat site for Fred, you'll only find your data for project A. etc.

The user name CAN be changed, using the option near the top of your Account page on each project. So you can get all of your projects set up with the same user name.

But I'm not sure if this is retrospective for the data on the stats sites.
Possibly not.

There is one more thing that needs to happen in order to have proper combined stats.

Each user has one or several unique cross project IDs (CPID).

This ID is not really "cross project", when there is no connection between the projects through the hosts.

If a user runs 4 projects all on different hosts (only one per host), the cross project IDs will never sync and the stats sites will list this one person as 4 separate users.

If host 1 is connected to projects A and B, host two connected to projects C and D, project A will sync with B, project C will sync with D but the two pairs of projects (A+B and C+D) will not sync amongst eachother.

Only if all projects are somehow connected, if there is an uninterrupted "path" between the projects, they all will sync sooner or later, which allows the stats sites to combine all user projects under the same CPID.

In the example above, one more host that connects B and C would do that job, but connecting host 1 to project C or D would have the same effect. Both would allow the A and B CPID to sync with the CPID of projects C and D.

Afaik. it isn't even necessary that the user name is the same across all projects in order to have combined stats - the email needs to be identical though.

Taking Les' example : If all projects of user Fred/Tom/Peter use the same email and they are "somehow" connected as described, finding Tom on a stats site will give you access to his CPID and through the CPID you'll find the combined stats. On BOINCstats you can see the CPID on each project's detail page for each user. If two projects of the same user have a different value there, they cannot be combined. All stats sites work like this and the project list below your account page in each project uses the CPID as well.

edit : I was right, the user name plays no role. One of my team mates has the same CPID on the BBC experiment and on SETI, even though his user name contains the project name in both cases. BoincStats lists all his projects under the same CPID, no matter which name he has choosen.

@SMURLEY : You don't have to change anything on your account, as your account page does show your other projects properly. That means that your CPID is in sync between those projects. If it doesn't get any better, you should rather try to detach from the project and then attach to it again.

Oh yeah! Thanks :) All I did was delete an old computer account on this site and also detach and reattach. Hey presto it's working now :)
