Is this really fixed? I have about 40 completed runs that have been trying to upload for over two weeks. Every day I try "Do Network Communicatons" and it fails then goes to "Upload:retry" for all of them. I've rebooted the computer, restarted boinc, and have the latest version, all to no avail.

There's enough of a backlog that I stopped downloading new runs and have been running SETI exclusively without problems...

Not "fixed" because it's an overload at the server or network connections in Tasmania.

Although at 2 weeks, you may have a different problem.

All 3 of your computers on this account have uploaded their work, and haven't contacted the servers since earlier in the month, so perhaps you have 2 accounts.

@Albert :

If you haven't restarted the BOINC core client for a long time, it might have cached an old IP.

The core client will renew the IP cache and retrieve the correct of the upload server only when it is restarted.

A PC restart is usually not necessary, restarting the BOINC client should do.

I hope it helps :-)

Thanks,

but my 2 machines are restarted every day. There must be a specific problem as .eu. and .pnw. can be uploaded.

any other hint ?

What version of the Boinc manger are you using. If it is version 7.2.39 there is a known problem uploading. If so you need to update to the 7.2.42.

There is indeed a problem specific to the ANZ models.
The server and the connections to it are getting hammered with LOTS of data trying to get to it.

The cure is patience.

But this only applies if the messages that you're getting are about transient failures.

Been away for 4 days and came back to a bunch of stuck uploads. I have managed to clear most of them except this one which seems to have got itself locked.

22-04-2014 05:34 PM [error] Error reported by file upload server: [hadam3p_anz_p8wg_2012_1_008642207_2_13.zip] locked by file_upload_handler PID=13801

Can I get Andy or one of the other admin guys to unlock it so I can complete the upload please.

Problem solved. It seems to have released the file and I have managed to upload it.

Message 48886 - Posted: 24 Apr 2014, 21:30:01 UTC

Wondering if my situation is unique? Running V.7.2.42 on Win.8.1 (64 bit) new PC. Got 4 data sets first day logged in ~Mar.26 - as far as I know none of the first trickle-ups have completely uploaded yet and now have completed 14 tasks (9 of hadam3p_anz and 5 of hadam3p_eu) I have 182 zip files queued up but only about 5 or 6 of them get a chance to retry each time the back-off period ends. Each of those sends a few bytes and then ends with the "transient HTTP error". I see a few other users with this problem but it looks like if they wait a while the uploads eventually work. In my case, at the rate my files are moving it'll take at least a year for them to complete. Data will be useless long before then. No new work coming to me, according to a message I saw a week ago when all my current tasks completed, until these uploads are done. Meanwhile, a lot of potential number crunching cycles are being lost. Any suggestions? Need any more info from my end?

First thing to check is that you haven't set a limit in the Transfer at most Enforced by version 6.10.46+ settings in the Network usage section of your global preferences (or if you have that it isn't being reached). If you have locally overridden the global preferences you'll need to check the override settings instead.

If that's not the case how quickly are your uploads failing? If it's after at least 5 minutes you could try following the process outlined here. There's a lot of useful stuff related to BOINC networking in that thread, and some of it might apply in your case.

Thyme - I checked my settings for a limit in "Tsf at most Enforced ..."and both variables are blank.
Read thru your referenced thread - I don't think that problem(s)relates to my situation. My uploads usually fail in 5 seconds or less.
Some background for you - my networking is via my ISP's satellite. No router (wireless or otherwise) used - I'm directly connected via cable from PC to ISP's modem to ISP's dish. I have a "medium" speed service (not dial-up and not high speed)with a total monthly usage limit (combined download & upload data volumes) of 20 GB. Currently have only used 20% (4 GB) for this month so no downgrading of service in effect.My max upload speed is (supposedly/theoretically)1.0 Mbps (doubt if it ever gets that high). No Proxy server used. Only have 1 PC connected to ISP's modem. No Internet problems to date.
I had some time today to watch the activity in BOINC MANAGER's TRANSFERS screen.Of the 182 zip files, only 5 have actually sent more than 2% of their data (2.3%; 3.0%;5.82%; 5.99%; 7.8%)while about 1/2 of the remainder have managed to send about 0.25% to 1.9% and the rest are still sitting at 0%. The only Commands available for Transfers are: "Retry Now" and "Abort Transfer". I clicked on Retry Now to see what would happen and saw 2 files' Status change from "Upload: pending" to "Active". The Event Log indicated both started uploading at the same time, then 14 seconds later reported that "Internet Access OK - project servers may be temporarily down". Then approx. 5 minutes later reported "Temporarily failed upload of x.zip: transient HTTP error" followed by "Backing off 1:31:17 on upload of x.zip" for one and "Backing off 00:04:46" on the other. Then .01 seconds later, the message "Project communication failed: attempting access to reference site" appeared. On the Transfers screen the Progress column showed no data had been uploaded. At another time today I observed a file whose status indicated "Upload: retry in 00:01:42" and watched it count down to "00". It also ended within a second or two and the Status changed to "Upload: pending (project backoff: 01:12:00)" but this time the Progress column changed from .41% (0.15/35.69MB) to .54% (0.19/35.69MB) so a tiny bit of data was in fact uploaded.
I noticed in the thread concerning the other upload problem in Oct/Nov that the eventual resolution seems to have been in limiting the number of uploads attempting to take place at the same time. As far as I can see in my case there are only about 4 files at most that are started at any time. Is this too much data for my pipe at once? If so, I don't see any way to limit the process as the commands to control the files themselves are so limited in what they can do. (Maybe move the files to another directory temporarily and only leave 1 behind to upload at a time?) However, my knowledge of networking is really very basic so I could be way, way off base here. What would you suggest trying now?

Message 48987 - Posted: 30 Apr 2014, 10:45:46 UTC - in response to Message 48953.

Hi Gary,

That sounds like BOINC is having problems contacting the upload server.

As you're running HadAM3P ANZ tasks your intermediate uploads should be going to http://rwah0.rdsi.tpac.org.au/cgi-bin/file_upload_handler and final upload to http://cpdn-restarts.oerc.ox.ac.uk/cgi-bin/file_upload_handler. Both of those links should generate the following response if you click on them:

<data_server_reply>
    <status>1</status>
    <message>no command</message>
</data_server_reply>

We'd need to see an HTTP debug trace to work out why the uploads are failing. To do that you'll need a cc_config.xml in your BOINC data directory containing the following:

<cc_config>
    <log_flags>
        <http_debug>1</http_debug>
        <http_xfer_debug>1</http_xfer_debug>
    </log_flags>
</cc_config>

The file must be created using a plain text editor (e.g. notepad). The BOINC client won't be able to read the file if you use a formatted text program (e.g. wordpad).

Having created the file you can start using it either by restarting BOINC or by clicking Advanced - Read config file on BOINC Manager's advanced view.

When a transfer fails post the debug messages from BOINC's event log. To disable HTTP debug you'll have to change the debug flag values in cc_config.xml to 0 and re-read the file.

Your logs show 'ACCEPT_LANGUAGE' in the headers. This was a typo in some recent BOINC client versions, notably v7.2.39 - it should have been 'ACCEPT-LANGUAGE' (hyphen, not underscore).

Update BOINC again to v7.2.42, and if problems persist, temporarily change the BOINC Manager display language with Tools|Options (you can set it back again immediately). That will reset the ACCEPT-LANGUAGE in the headers, and file transfers should work again.

Looks like I jumped the gun on this one - Garry has sent me a PM saying that the same problem persists after re-installing the recommended version of BOINC and tweaking his language settings.

Turns out there were two problems with v7.2.39: it had a habit of putting "ACCEPT_LANGUAGE: [garbage]" into the headers. The [garbage] problem was fixed in v7.2.42, but Accept-Language wasn't corrected until v7.3 (still in testing).

v7.2.42 works for most people, but ACCEPT_LANGUAGE is apparently rejected by some proxy servers - so it's a real problem: but I don't see any sign of proxy use here, so the header may not be implicated after all - sorry about that.

Looking at the log in more detail, it seems that BOINC couldn't get a reply even from Google (which it uses as a likely 'always on' test site for network problems) - it waited five minutes, but gave up when it heard nothing at all.

Reading back, you have a satellite/modem internet connection, which is unfamiliar to me. I take it that you can do normal internet things (like browsing this website) from that same computer over the same connection - including connecting to Google? If that works, but BOINC doesn't, then I'm afraid I'm at a loss.

The only other straw I can suggest clutching at (and it really is only that) would be to try changing to HTTP/1.0 with

<cc_config>
<options>
<http_1_0>1</http_1_0>
</options>
</cc_config>

(see Client configuration - you can combine that with the logging flags you're using already)

I'm not totally sure about the effect it has ... but host 1321940 is "nulled" (0 workunits per day).

When I had "-1/day" in the beta project, it rejected my trickle reports (but coupled with a message "not accepting requests from this host") - could it be a similar problem here?

Otoh. ... how would the upload server know about it? So I guess Richard is right, it must be a timeout on server side caused by the slow connection that the reference access complains about too - especially as the host details show "Average upload rate : Unknown"
