Hey People,

I started yesterday to help on this project. I wait from just at the moment but I don't receive any packet from the server. Is this normal for the moment or could I have a problem?

This project releases tasks in batches of several thousand at a time at irregular intervals depending on what the researchers send to the folks at Oxford University. From time to time there are automatically generated work units that follow on from earlier ones and resubmissions that have failed or been aborted on another computer.

The upshot of this is that there are times when there is little or no work available unless your computer happens to send a request at just the right time. Also it is not work repeatedly pressing the project update button as that just makes things time out for another hour.

It is worth when out of tasks for CPDN attaching to another worthwhile project.

That said, most of the time I have enough work to keep my computers fully occupied from climate prediction though there was recently quite a long break without any work.

hello mamph

welcome to the project !!!

as dave jackson said, most of us also participate in other projects, in order to have something for our machines to process during the times CPDN does not have any work available...

check "server status" in the list over on the left side of the screen...

As Frank has said, if you want your computer to be busy doing research and no CPDN work is available, the best thing is to join at least one other project as well. Do this in your BOINC Manager Tools menu. You'll see a list of other projects which are all reliable and respectable and safe. For each project there's a link to its web page so you can think about the type of research they do. You can then choose a project you like.

It's a good idea to use the same email address for every project because this is how BOINC identifies us.

Mamph,

KWSN - Sir Frank of the Wood pointed out how to see what's going on with the climateprediction.net servers.

To see what's going on on your own computer, in Boinc Manager change to "Advanced view" and then press Ctrl+Shift+E to get the 'Event Log' window. (Or, select "Event log..." from the "Advanced" menu.)

Read the messages there. Among them you should see one that tells you "The project has no work available" (or similar words). If you see that message, then your computer is configured correctly. All you can do is wait, along with the rest of us. :-) Messages like "Unable to connect to server" indicate that there is a problem that needs fixing.

It's a good idea to check the Event Log regularly. Sometimes software updates break things that used to work.

Dear Mamph

One thing to check before you attach to another project is the setting for your work buffer. I dont know what the default setting is, but, at CPDN most of us tend to set it at or near the maximum of 10 days so that we have a long time to download new work before we finish the WUs that we are presently crunching.

The problem is that most of the other projects have much short deadlines (and unlike CPDN enforce them) of 3 to 5 days. If your work buffer is set to 10 days you are going to download a ton of WUs, far more than you can crunch in the allotted time. So before attaching to a new project check that work buffer.

Another potential problem is that just as CPDN doesnt always have work available, not all of the other do either. Orbit@home hasnt had any in over a year. Some good ones that always seem to have work are MalariaControl.net, Rosetta@home, and the drug search programs (like Go Fight Against Malaria, Say No to Schistosoma and Drug Search for Leismaniasis) at World Community Grid. All are important tropical diseases that there are not nearly enough safe and effective drugs treatments for. With global warming they could spread north. World Community Grid does good work and always seem to have work available.
