Newly upgraded machine (Win7); reinstalled BOINC and reattached to climateprediction.net. Some 20 tasks have been downloaded in the last few days: every one was immediately rejected because the MD5 checksum was wrong. Sample: 14/02/2011 11:19:27 a.m. climateprediction.net Started download of HadISST_SI_N96_1984_12_1987_01f.gz 14/02/2011 11:19:41 a.m. climateprediction.net Finished download of HadISST_SI_N96_1984_12_1987_01f.gz 14/02/2011 11:19:41 a.m. climateprediction.net [error] MD5 check failed for HadISST_SI_N96_1984_12_1987_01f.gz 14/02/2011 11:19:41 a.m. climateprediction.net [error] expected 04a664d6cd665a78df9bc1af5f279ee8, got e3772a7460cce89d78b3ebbd78d4c7bc 14/02/2011 11:19:41 a.m. climateprediction.net [error] Checksum or signature error for HadISST_SI_N96_1984_12_1987_01f.gz So far, I have not got any climate work that I can use, so I would welcome any suggestions. (Another BOINC project has been downloading and running work successfully the whole time.) Paul |

Same problems here, on a Vista64 and a XP32 machines. Found that it also happened on cosmology, so I suspected it had something to with using a proxy on my firewall. I set the boinc clients to not use the proxy, and i managed to download a unit from climate. Sadly my quota for today is used up, so I don't know if it is just a fluke that this one unit succeeded. (It was the xp32 machine that got it.) I will know tomorrow if there are more coming, then it will be safe to assume that the proxy somehow corrupts the units md5 checksum. (It's a linux based firewall, and i use the setting http_1_0 in cc_config). I don't know if it helps you guys, but I thought it was worth mentioning. Will return tomorrow, if there are still problems or not. |

The CPDN download files are mirrored to 3 different servers. I've just run a browser test on the file Paul quoted. Although I was able to download the identical file from all 3 one of them only starts the download about 1 time in 3. That might not be related to the problem, but I'll pass the details on. Thanks Thyme. It still occurs for my pc's, but managed to get 1 unit on the vista pc. So not proxy related here. Maybe the servers need a check up? |

I think this is most likely to be a faulty checksum generated for the file when it was created. Like Paul, I got a climateprediction.net [error] expected 202c65ba6685e55e6c0f237fa2558407, got 0609d7dbb9e71618fd60f27651c4e2e0 I downloaded a second copy of the file, and confirmed that both copies had an MD5 of 0609d7dbb9e71618fd60f27651c4e2e0 When I put that into client_state.xml as the 'expected' MD5 for BOINC to use, and cleaned some colateral damage, the task runs seemingly as normal. |

If just one or two items had been bad, I would have assumed it was a genuinely bad checksum. But I did discover that I had set the http proxy for my firewall, but not a SOCKS proxy. When I set the SOCKS proxy also, everything started working normally. The trouble with errors like this is that one never knows if the solution was just a coincidence. Maybe the servers just started sending me good work units at that time. Whatever the cause, I am happy now. :) Paul PaulVD |
