As you can see from the Event Log, I am unable to upload trickles and finished tasks from both climateprediction.net and CPDN Beta. What to do? What to do? I do not want to lose the time expanded and abort.

I would say, suspend all CPDN work until the server-outage is fixed, probably next year , because the staff is in holiday (xmas-new year)
for further infos look here and in the news (top 3 newest infos there)

There can be no harm in leaving Activity Running (either Always or Based on Preferences), but set as "Network Activity Suspended" until normality is resumed after the holidays. Then your crunching can continue until all your tasks have been completed, and are awaiting (suspended) in the Transfers page.

If the project is left without any maintenance for such long period, then we got from the staff the worst Christmas gift - true bouquet of permanent and growing problems.
Sad, very sad. Some of my machines are remote and outside of my control. So I think, my counter-gift will be a lot of lost climate data and many hours of useless work. Let the process go. :-(

These problems are hardly permanent. However, they need staff to fix them, and CPDN currently has no computing staff whatsoever. I don't work for CPDN any more and have not done so since 1/12/10, although I will do what I can whilst we wait for the new recruits to be appointed. Hopefully this will be within one month as both posts have been filled.

Is there a time-out on the zips waiting to upload? I currently have 20 waiting in the transfers tab since the 25th.

I was crunching alternative projects on WCG, Drug Discovery and Virtual Prairie but these have run out of work so I would prefer to carry on with CPDN models. I have 5 which have been running for some time and 3 new ones have downloaded recently and don't mind the zips sitting there provided I know they will eventually be uploaded, no matter how long this takes.

Far better to heat my office using the spare heat from the computer as it crunches away rather than turning on an electric heater ;=)

You should be OK for uploads from the 25th; if the problem with kraken is just a power failure then it will be up within a few days and climateapps1 shouldn't be much longer.

Milo

I am sure I can speak for all crunchers in expressing heartfelt thanks for your help during the changeover of staff. We would be lost without that and could lose many crunchers who do not realize the problems being faced temporarily.

And I am sure also that we all wish you well in your new appointment - Best of luck to you in the New Year.

Thank you, gentlemen.

By the way, I just had an idea for something that might bring climateapps1 back on line, although if it works it might not be successful for 24 hours or so.

With v6.10.0 and later BOINC-clients, if a transfer still fails 90 days after the 1st. transfer-attempt, the BOINC-client aborts the transfer. For v6.6.xx and earlier clients, the timeout is only 14 days.

It would be timely for the scientists behind CPDN to post an announcement to review 2010 and especially the past few months as well as provide a look ahead for 2011 to all participants.

As there are no staff right now, that may be a time in happening, desirable as it might be.

And I am sure the new staff taking over will want to introduce themselves and summarize the state of affairs that they are about to tackle.

Let us wish them every success, and I am sure they will get much help from the retiring staff, who have done sterling work up to the present time.
