I'm completely new to this but it's been "Downloading work from the server" for over 2 hours. Any suggestion how to fix it or what might be wrong?

Thanks for your help.

Hi George,

welcome to Climateprediction.net! (which we often abbreviate to CPDN, since it's a lot to type.)

In the Boinc Manager, click on "advanced view" if you haven't already done so.

This view has six tabs across the top: projects, tasks, transfers, messages, statistics, disks.

Click on "transfers". That should show you what's happening.

The first time you connect to CPDN, your computer has to download the climate model programs and a few big data files, as well as two or three smaller files for each of the tasks that your computer got.

In future, only the small files for each new task will be downloaded. Until, that is, they release a new version of the program ... ;-)

Hope this helps.

Hi George, welcome to the forum

I see you've got 4 regional models, two each of two types. The download files are large. I downloaded 4 of one region a day before you and the downloads took well over an hour with broadband.

Some of the files got stuck part-way during the d/l and others had a hard time to start downloading though they all succeeded in the end. From your computer project web page, which I can see by clicking on your name, it looks as if all 4 models may be ready to process now. Is that so?

If there are still any files stuck in download, highlight one in your Boinc manager Transfers tab and then press the Retry Now button. Sometimes that gets a file restarted.

Edit: Greg beat me to it!

I downloaded BOINC. It appears to have downloaded a project but all I get now is "communication deferred", no tasks, no transfers and the following messages:

Hi luis
Welcome to the project

You're not getting any work, because your computer keeps crashing models as soon as they try to start. There's a server limit to downloads, to prevent the rapid draining of the data pool.

If you look at your account page on the project's server, you'll find a link to the models. This is that page.
Looking at any of them, this one for instance, you'll see part way down: Stderr. Click on the + symbol, and you can see the notification messages, including the error: CreateProcess() failed - The system cannot find the file specified. (0x2)

CreateProcess() failed is usually a permissions problem; the program can't write to the data area.
As BOINC should have set this up when it was installed, the first thing to try, is to remove it and then re-install it.

Use Windows Add/Remove programs to remove BOINC. This will leave all of the science programs and data intact.
Then download BOINC again, and install it in the same place.

Let us know how you get on.

PS
You'll have to wait until after midnight, project time, to get more work. In this case, it's UK time.
