I have Vista home premium 64-bit on a Gateway LX6810-01 (quad core duo). Not paying attention I see no progress on the three climate models for the past month. My stats graph is flat. Boinc Manager says I\'m running but Windows Task Manager shows no activity. I also run SETI and Rosetta and they show activity. When only these two projects are running I show four active tasks making progress. Only climateprediction has a problem. Ideas? |

In order not to miss their short deadlines BOINC could be running them while it keeps Climateprediction suspended. |

That\'s the best guess. And the way to test it, is to set all projects to No new tasks, Suspend all non-climate wus, and see if BOINC starts running the climate models. Please post back with the result of doing this. |

Boinc Manager says I\'m running but Windows Task Manager shows no activity. I also run SETI and Rosetta and they show activity. When only these two projects are running I show four active tasks making progress. Only climateprediction has a problem. I have allocated CPU use at 200 for Climate and 100 each for SETI and Rosetta. In Boinc manager I see, for example, three Climate models shown as running with the the elapsed time advancing but no change in the progress percentage. The time remaining has declined some on two but the third has increased. Looking at Rosetta those same columns advance or decline as expected. I neglected to say that the GPU is being used by SETI alone, so that when I hover over the system tray Boinc icon the message shows 5 tasks running |

I have allocated CPU use at 200 for Climate and 100 each for SETI and Rosetta. That\'s just the average amount of time share over several weeks. The only way to see high priority is to look for the messages about this. And I\'ve no idea where these are. PS The other possibilies are 1) \"Ice Worlds\" (FAQ) 2) Rewind. That\'s the best guess. Setting the other projects to \"won\'t get new tasks\" and suspending their active and \"ready to start\" models caused Climate to download another model and to begin it. This model appears to function properly and task manager also shows this one model with 25 percent of the system (one CPU). I am loathe to abort the other three models but this seems to be indicated. Agree? |

Also when I display the graphics for the three non-performing models I get a blue temperature globe with date and time both 00:00. Suspending the CUDA SETI does not change this. |

:( I said all projects. This was to force the other, current, climate models to start if at all possible. However, yes, abort the others. There are thousands that have been, for one reason or another. |

\"Blue\" is the default color for models that aren\'t running. |

Everything else is suspended and no new tasks for them. Climate downloaded three more models and they show with elapsed time incrementing but no progress. Task manager shows them to be inactive and their graphics is the default with 00:00 time and date. To completion for them has not declined any. |

I show four tasks as running but only the first is running correctly. Graphics for it are correct. |

I rebooted and then launched Boinc manager. I show all Climate models as running and none are working correctly: time increments correctly but no progress. |

When I look at task manager I see 14 copies of hadsm3_um_6.07_windows_intelx86.exe and three copies of hadsm3_6.07_windows_intelx86.exe and of these one of the latter shows four seconds of total use with the rest zero for CPU use and total CPU time. |

What do BOINC\'s internal messages (Advanced view, final tab) say? Anything about \'waiting for memory\' or \'suspended - user active\' - things like that? Anything that seems informative and/or unusual, please copy and post here. |

I have suspended everything except the Climate models. The status of each is \"running\". In the \"Messages\" tab I have that each one is resumed by user and then that each is using hadsm3 version 607. When I look at task manager I now see 15 copies of hadsm3_um_6.07_windows_intelx86.exe and four copies of hadsm3_6.07_windows_intelx86.exe and of these one of the latter shows four seconds of total use with the rest zero for CPU use and total CPU time. Nothing unusual in the messages. |

I rebooted to try to get the extra copies of the .exe processes out of memory. When I look at task manager I now see four copies of hadsm3_um_6.07_windows_intelx86.exe and four copies of hadsm3_6.07_windows_intelx86.exe and all are zero for CPU use and total CPU time. Boinc Manager says all climate modules are running elapsed time is incrementing but still no progress. |

This is bizarre. There\'s nothing inherently wrong with Charles\'s computer which produced pagefuls of successfully completed models last year. Here are the recent models. We can see the three aborted models, one of which is at the top of the list. Charles, did it appear that these three models and the one that crashed on Saturday afternoon your time had made no progress? They were in fact all about ¾ completed eg this one. Have you still got Boinc 6.10.18? The model that crashed on Saturday had exit code -2. I don\'t know about this code but does anyone think Charles should do anything to avoid it in future? Secondly, your quad looks nice and fast. Faster than mine. But my HadAM3P models progress twice as fast. This could be because it isn\'t usually a good idea to fully load a multicore machine with HadAM3P which slow each other down. (This doesn\'t apply to other model types.) When you downloaded these models they may have been the only type available, but usually it\'s best to select other model types as well in the hope of getting a mix. And/or could the -2 problem have affected the three aborted models as well, slowing them down without crashing them? Cpdn news |

I was looking at the performance as well, and wondering. The hadsm3 type models are about as fast as I would expect them to be, but the hadam3p models are quite slow. I think that that is just the relatively small L2 cache on the Q8200 combined with the Core2 architecture. Running 4 on a Core 2 Quad of any type really results in a significant slowdown. Running 4 on a C2Q with only 4 MB of L2 must really strain it. I can\'t think what might be causing this inability to run. Perhaps the best advice is to Detach that computer from climateprediction.net and then reattach. Maybe that will clear it out. But I wouldn\'t bet on it. |

I have been using two computers: the Gateway (Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q8200 @ 2.33GHz [Intel64 Family 6 Model 23 Stepping 7] Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium x64 Edition, Service Pack 2, (06.00.6002.00)) ID 941824 and this one I built myself (Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.06GHz [x86 Family 15 Model 2 Stepping 7] Microsoft Windows XP Professional x86 Edition, Service Pack 3, (05.01.2600.00)) ID 461805 I downloaded boinc_6.10.18_windows_intelx86.exe on 2 Dec 2009 and installed it on the Gateway 3 Dec 2009. My other computer is currently too unstable to find out when I installed Boinc 6.10.18 and I have not yet determined if the problem is hardware or a video driver. After 8 years and a new motherboard, video card and power supply the CPU and memory have endured a lot of heating. The Gateway is now a year old. When I became aware that no progress was apparent the modules were well toward completion, but I don\'t recall how far. I sometimes use a sidebar gadget that displays CPU and memory use and when I launched it I saw numbers like 31% for CPU use--barely more than one processor equivalent of the four. I have been used to seeing 100% with Boinc taking over 95%. The CUDA is used only by SETI at this point. Boinc Manager currently shows elapsed time 00:33:03, progress 0.000% and to completion 487:14:11 for three of the modules that were downloaded when I neglected to set climate at \"no new units\" and suspended the other projects with them both set to \"no new units\". The other unit somehow worked til I rebooted the computer and shows elapsed 01:23:39, progress 0.335% and to completion 485:07:14. It appears that those final three have not even started. Graphics show 00:00 time and date for them. Boinc Manager shows a flat graph for the last month for Climate. The other projects do show graph progress. Do trickles get any credit to affect the graph? |

Trickles are the ONLY thing that gets credit! Set climate for No new work. Set Network activity suspended in the manager\'s menu. Now Suspend the climate model that seems to be working. Does this force one of the other climate models to start? It\'s possible that the cuda software is causing problems, but so far this has only been reported with the latest beta versions of BOINC.
