No mention there of this:
12/09/2008 1:59:29 PM||Running as a daemon

Now that you mention it, I used to see this daemon remark every time I restarted BOINC. I don\'t see it any more...ever.

Will advise after completing the other tests.

Try:
1) In the Projects tab, set all projects to No new tasks
2) In the Tasks tab, Suspend all except one WU.
3) Select the one that\'s running, and try to look at the graphics.
4) Suspend this Wu.
5) Start one of the others, and try to look at it\'s graphics.
6) Do this with all WUs, making a note about which projects don\'t show a graphic.
7) Allow all WUs to run, and set all projects to Allow new tasks
8 ) Post results here.

Okay - for CPDN, Einstein@home and Seti@home, the graphics tab was not greyed-out, but the graphics wouldn\'t display for any of the three, no matter how long I waited.

For Milkyway, Orbit, Cosmology and Enigma, the tab remained greyed-out, which I took to mean there were no graphics available.

Didn\'t have a task for lhcathome, so don\'t know either way, but if memory serves, that one doesn\'t have graphics either.

In short, no graphics.

I am a little concerned about the missing \"daemon\" remark, tho\'.

Bob, if there\'s a message line saying \'Running as a daemon\' it means you installed BOINC in protected/service mode. If the daemon message line isn\'t there, you installed in unprotected/graphics/screensaver/non-service mode.

So everything indicates that your BOINC isn\'t installed as a service. You can double- or triple-check by carrying out Richard\'s other suggestion; he said

\'Assuming that you have a BOINC Manager icon somewhere, such as the system tray (near the clock): Restore it up to normal on-screen size, then choose File|Exit from the menu. Repeat if you have any spare BOINC Manager icons down there. Now, check Task Manager. If there are no BOINC/project processes running, then you are not running as a service.\'

If you do report back with a negative for that extra check (we\'d like to know to be certain), I think the problem probably lies in your computer\'s video card. Because BOINC5 in non-service mode should display the graphics of your version 5 climate model.

I know you want to be able to see the graphics window and not the screensaver, but I suggest looking at this thread on the boinc_dev forum. And also on the CPDN independent forum, in the project READMEs which are 3 sections from the top, look at link #7 in this README. That\'s a post by Thyme Lawn.

You probably just need these video card updates. Sometimes even new computers need them. They\'re free from the web rather like Windows updates.

There\'s not much point in checking further; if the messages don\'t say that a daemon is running, then it\'s NOT a service install.

However, I had another thought:
In the V5 install, there are 3 modes, one of which is for Multi-user. This allows BOINC to run whenever any of the users are logged onto the computer, but only the user whose account was used to install BOINC will be able to see the graphics.

My latest guess is that on a \"recent\" re-install, the person doing it clicked the wrong option, and ended up with Multi-user, rather than Service.

The cure for this is yet another boring re-install.

Hi,

I am also having the same problem with graphics on BOINC 6.2.18 running application hadCM3 Coupled Model Experiment Optimised File I/O 5.44. Why it has stopped running is a mystery as it was working o.k. last month.

Was \"last month\" BEFORE you upgraded to 6.2.18?
If so, did you read the FAQ linked from the BOINC web site Download page, which explains about graphics being different?

.

Same story: the \"Show Graphics\" button is grayed-out in my BOINC manager for:

HADAM3 6.01

using BOINC manager version: 5.10.45

I\'ve tried BOINC6, but still no graphics. I reverted back to BOINC5 for an unrelated LHC@home app compatibility issue. Still no graphics. I\'ve tried other work-arounds to no avail.

This really blows.

____

....at 17:30 UTC, it started working again - out of nowhere. The Show Graphics button is back and the screensaver works fine.

Had you exited from BOINC and then restarted it?
