My BOINC has started a 500 hours computation work, during first computation hours a graphic representing the climate model was available. Now in the main simple BOINC Manager window, only \"running\" is displayed under the logo and the \"graphics available\" text has desapeared...

What happened ?

Regards,
Amaury

Hi Amaury, welcome to the forum.

Please change temporarily to Boinc Manager advanced view. In the Tasks tab, could you tell us the version number of your model? (It\'s a Mid-Holocene model.) I think it will say 6.02.

Have you upgraded from BOINC v.5 to v.6 after you started this model?

Hi, everyone. I have the same problem. I am running 2 models on a Intel core2duo processor. One is a CM and the other is one of the new Mid-Holocene models. I migrated back to the 5.10.45 version of the boinc manager from the 6.2.18 to cure an unrelated problem. It cured that problem, but, now I have another one. There are no graphics on the MH model. Graphics tab in “Tasks” is grayed out. Graphics are normal on the CM model. It drives me crazy not knowing what year I am in. How do I get the graphics back? Is there a solution?

Me too. I just noticed the \"show graphics\" tab has grayed itself out...didn\'t used to be that way only a few days ago, but even then it didn\'t work. I\'d press the tab but nothing happened. My model is a HadSM3 5.06 model. I too went back to 5.10.45 from 6.2.18, but the tab wasn\'t working even before I went to 6.2.18.

So the models that have lost their graphics are

HADSM MH 6.02 Amaury could be on BOINC5 or BOINC6

HADSM MH 6.02 Jim on BOINC 5.10.45

HADSM 5.06 Bob on BOINC 6.2.18 & 5.10.45

The BOINC6-compliant CPDN models called 6.** are all supposed to be backwards-compatible. Their graphics should be viewable on BOINC5 and on BOINC6 in both installation modes (service/protected and unprotected/screensaver modes).

CPDN v.5** models should have graphics on BOINC6 when installed in \'screensaver\'mode only.

There\'s obviously something wrong at the CPDN end and I\'ll report this.

If anyone else has this problem, please post giving the type and version of model, and BOINC version.

(I still have a Beta HADSM MH 6.02 running on BOINC 6.2.18 and its graphics show, so I don\'t think there\'s a defect inherent in the model. Tolu may just need to enable some setting that\'s been inadvertently inactivated.)

Please, upgrade to BOINC version 6.
The application will run using BOINC version 5 but due to some timing issue,
the graphics tab won\'t always be enabled.
This is a known unresolved backward compatibility issue.

Let me know if you see this disabled graphics tab with BOINC version 6
and version 6 science application.

Hi, everyone. I migrated back to 6.2.18 and it seems to have worked, at least for now. The graphics are back. The button is back in “tabs”. Will let you know if this holds

A couple of days ago, I posted a \"me too\" to this thread.

This morning, I noticed that the \"Show Graphics\" tab has un-grayed itself, but it still doesn\'t work. I press the tab but nothing happens.

This isn\'t really a big deal to me (although I do miss seeing what my model is thinking) as long as my model is computing correctly. I\'d hate to think the work being done is useless.

By the way, I\'ve changed nothing. Still a HadSM3 5.06 model running under BOINC version 5.10.45.

Bob, there\'s no problem regarding the usefulness of your model. It will be processing its data properly and its file uploads will be used.

You have a version 5 HADSM app running on BOINC 5.10.45 after you upgraded to 6.2.18 and then reverted to 5.10.45. Not being able to see the graphics is a nuisance. Could you please try these ideas:

* Exit completely from BOINC (not just close BOINC Manager), then restart it.

* If that doesn\'t work, exit from BOINC then reboot the computer, then restart BOINC.

If that doesn\'t work either could you tell us whether you have your BOINC 5.10.45 installed as a service.

No change - still doesn\'t work.

[* If that doesn\'t work, exit from BOINC then reboot the computer, then restart BOINC.]

ditto

BOINC is running as a service.

I got to thinking, tho\'. (What was it Milne said about a first-rate mind only being happy when it\'s thinking? :) Actually, the graphics no longer work on ANY of the projects I\'m working on; not just CPDN. I don\'t know about some of them - I don\'t even know for sure if they even HAVE graphics. I do know that of the projects I work on, three (CPDN, Einstein@home and Seti@home) USED to have graphics. Now the tab is either greyed out, even when the task is running, or simply doesn\'t work at all.

I sort of vaguely recall reading on some message board or another that the graphics won\'t work as a function of BOINC if the computer is considered overloaded, but I don\'t remember for sure.

In any event, I doubt this situation is a function of CPDN exclusively. Sounds like a BOINC thing to me.

I\'ve never run Einstein, but Seti definitely has graphics. And as far as I know no project\'s graphics become disabled if the computer\'s overloaded. This function isn\'t built into BOINC. BOINC doesn\'t detect how overloaded computers are or how hot they get.

So that\'s not the problem. I think the problem is that you have BOINC5 installed as a service.

Here\'s a workaround/fix in Jorden\'s FAQ. (This is only for BOINC5, not BOINC6).

If you do that, could you please let us know whether it works for you.

To show graphics on a BOINC service install, the following all have to be true (there may be others as well, but these are all I can think of off the top of my head):

1) BOINC must run under the \'Local System account\', and it must be allowed to interact with the desktop. Open \'Services\' from the administrative tools in Control Panel, or run \"services.msc\" from the start menu, to view/change this. Double-click on the BOINC entry in the services list, and look at the second tab (\'Log On\') in the property dialog. If you change anything, you\'ll be reminded that you need to stop and restart the service for the changes to take effect.

2) The project must have a graphical component to their application (not all do).

3) The project/application must actually be running, not preempted in favour of another task.

I\'ve never run Einstein, but Seti definitely has graphics.

Careful - many SETI users run optimised applications, and many (but not all) optimisations leave out the graphics to save a few processing cycles.

So while it\'s true to say that SETI as a project offers graphics, you can\'t conclude that any particular user can see them.

Thanks for all the extra information, Richard.

Getting and keeping the documentation up-to-date for two major BOINC versions simultaneously is a big job for a lot of people, and this situation won\'t change for quite a while.

Okay, as my grandson says, this is getting weird.

If I run services.msc as stipulated in the FAQ, BOINC isn\'t listed at all; yet in taskmgr, both boincmgr and the currently-running project software are both listed in the \"Process\" window. I\'ve always assumed the programs listed in the \"Process\" window were running as services. If I right-click on the program from the \"Process\" window, all I can do is reset the priority or stop the process.

What am I doing wrong?

I have one computer with BOINC5 and another with BOINC6. These BOINCs are not installed as a service. Boincmgr.exe and the models appear in Task Manager\'s Process window on both computers.

I\'m hoping Richard or someone else will help you with the rest.

Well, the first thing to do is to establish definitively whether BOINC is, or is not, installed as a service. Not seeing it listed in the services snap-in (services.msc) is a pretty strong indication that it is not installed as a service. Seeing it listed in processes just says that it\'s running: it doesn\'t say anything about how it came to be that way.

Assuming that you have a BOINC Manager icon somewhere, such as the system tray (near the clock): Restore it up to normal on-screen size, then choose File|Exit from the menu. Repeat if you have any spare BOINC Manager icons down there. Now, check Task Manager. If there are no BOINC/project processes running, then you are not running as a service.

Now open BOINC Manager again, and go to the messages tab (in advanced view). What do you see? If you see messages about BOINC starting up, then again, you are not running as a service. Wait until the science applications have started up, then copy all messages and paste them here - there may be some clues the team can pick over.

I now return you to your regular CPDN graphics team....

No mention there of this:
12/09/2008 1:59:29 PM||Running as a daemon

Try:
1) In the Projects tab, set all projects to No new tasks
2) In the Tasks tab, Suspend all except one WU.
3) Select the one that\'s running, and try to look at the graphics.
4) Suspend this Wu.
5) Start one of the others, and try to look at it\'s graphics.
6) Do this with all WUs, making a note about which projects don\'t show a graphic.
7) Allow all WUs to run, and set all projects to Allow new tasks
8 ) Post results here.

(Note that climate model graphics can take several minutes to start working.)
