I got a message in the messages of Boinc of a recommended upgrade of Boinc. Is it necessary to do it now or can I wait till my tasks are complete? Two CPDN models running fine and about 50 WU\'s waiting to upload to SETI. I don\'t want anything messing up on me now. Current for me is 5.10.45 and 165 hours left on one and 285 on the other. I just want it to go smoothly is all.
Thanks, Jack

If everything is running okay, you can ignore it for now. Stability seems \"iffy\" and it might be wise to allow it to mature a bit. It\'s really an accommodation to M$ Vista, which doesn\'t like data in C:\\Programs folder.

Edit: Some 6.x CPDN versions are being tested on the Beta site. When they \"go public\" a boinc 6.x version will be required to view graphics. (CPDN + boinc used to be merely complicated; now . . .)

That is what I was hoping to hear. I\'m sure change is good, but software changes are hard when something works and works right the way you like it. After my cache is run out I\'ll look into it more. Thanks astro.

I\'ve upgraded on Vista from 5.10.45 to 6.2.16, and it went well for me.

I shut down Boinc, then upgraded from here: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download.php

I just used all the defaults, then I had to reboot, and it\'s picked up from where it left off.

The only real change is that it starts up automatically on Vista instead of me having to start it manually. For this alone, I\'d recommend that the version here be changed:

I upgraded on my comp... the problem is that I use the comp for work as well and I boot to LINUX from a disk bypassing the windows operating system when I work. Can you say SNAFU? YIKES. Could not log onto work because the default automatically runs it from the BOOT and once I switched the comp back to windows every WU in process immediately went to comp error.

I dont like the idea of amything defaulting on my comp where you can\'t turn it off and on at will and unless you catch it before you install it, you can\'t. You wind up with every message ever sent on the thing taking up disk space. Close it out and reopen and three days worth of messages are still there.... that is short of shutting your whole system down.

There are times when I DON\'t want BOINC to run as in when I am working in windows and need my full 3GB of memory.

Anyone know of a way to get the thing out of BIOS with running out your tasks and uninstalling it?

Best advice is NOT to run BOINC on mission critical computers.

I don\'t know why you think that BOINC is in the bios, because it\'s not.

You don\'t say WHAT you upgraded, but for BOINC version 5:
To stop it from auto-starting in Windows:

Look in the Windows Start Menu, (which is under Documents and Settings on XP), and find the BOINC folder with a shortcut to [b]BOINC Manager[b].
Remove the shortcut icon.

If the upgrade was for BOINC from V5 to V6, then I\'m not sure. Likewise if you\'re running Vista.
In this/these case(s), there is some documentation here, which contains links to lots of docs.

I upgraded from 5.10.45 to 6.2.16 and everything went perfectly. I carefully (some would say obsessively) followed the directions to the letter - uninstalled 5.10.45 first, upgraded and just let the new version do it\'s thing. As it happened, the only task i was running was a CPDN model and so far, everyone is playing well together.

The one issue I\'m having, and I\'m not sure exactly why, is when I restart my computer each morning, I get the following messages:

climateprediction.net|Restarting task hadsm3fub_jnfn_005948502_3 using hadsm3 version 506
climateprediction.net|Sending scheduler request: To send trickle-up message. Requesting 0 seconds of work, reporting 0 completed tasks
climateprediction.net|Task hadsm3fub_jnfn_005948502_3 exited with zero status but no \'finished\' file
climateprediction.net|If this happens repeatedly you may need to reset the project.
climateprediction.net|Restarting task hadsm3fub_jnfn_005948502_3 using hadsm3 version 506
climateprediction.net|Scheduler request succeeded: got 0 new tasks

I\'m guessing this is because I didn\'t shut BOINC down before shutting down my computer, but I have yet to be able to figure out how to shut down 6.2.16 when it\'s running as an XP service. The old way was to simply EXIT from BOINC, but this isn\'t so on the new version.

I\'m learning about the new version by a sort of \'osmosis\' effect, each time someone comes up with something new.

From the BOINC 6 release notes at the bottom of our help page here. (It\'s the first post in the thread):
1.4.3 Shutting down BOINC:

Shutting down BOINC

When the \"Protected application execution\" option is selected, BOINC Manager no longer shuts down BOINC when you exit BOINC Manager. To shut down BOINC, go to the Advanced menu and select \"Shut down connected client...\".

Please let me know if this works.

Yes, this does shut BOINC down, but the only way I could find to restart it was to actually reboot the computer. Seems a bit of a kludge, actually.

Perhaps I could have restarted without rebooting had I known what BOINC calls my computer, but I couldn\'t find that, either.

Also, on startup, I received the same set of messages:

climateprediction.net|Restarting task hadsm3fub_jnfn_005948502_3 using hadsm3 version 506
climateprediction.net|Sending scheduler request: To send trickle-up message. Requesting 0 seconds of work, reporting 0 completed tasks
climateprediction.net|Task hadsm3fub_jnfn_005948502_3 exited with zero status but no \'finished\' file
climateprediction.net|If this happens repeatedly you may need to reset the project.

climateprediction.net|Scheduler request succeeded: got 0 new tasks
climateprediction.net|Sending scheduler request: To send trickle-up message. Requesting 0 seconds of work, reporting 0 completed tasks

Apparently, my guess about not shutting down properly was a little off the the mark.

OK, I\'ll have to find out how to restart BOINC.

Slab models (currently labeled \"fub\"), always restart with a \'fake\' trickle_up file.
These are of type cse, and just tell the server that the model is back again, and still OK. (You can see the type by looking at the start of a file. Carefully!)

The other part, zero status, etc, is \'mostly harmless\', to quote a certain series of books. :)

OK, I\'ll have to find out how to restart BOINC.

There are a couple of ways of restarting BOINC that work for me

1. Click Start - Run and then enter \'net start boinc\' (without the apostrophes). Then in BOINC Manager click Advanced - Select computer. Leave the boxes blank and just click OK to connect to localhost.

2. Exit BOINC Manager completely, then relaunch it. This should start the core client as well.

Hope this helps

OK, I\'ve got the answer for BOINC V6:

My question:
Shutting down the new BOINC is documented, but how does one restart it without a re-boot?

The reply:
You can\'t. Due to the new accounts made for BOINC, Windows needs to reboot in order for those accounts to become active. Without it BOINC won\'t run.

First, thank you, Les, for all your help. I appreciate your efforts.

Personally, I\'m starting to regret going to V6. It\'s seems an awful lot of trouble to manage for no real benefit on an XP machine. Being able to run as a daemon seemed a good idea at the time, but frankly, I feel like I gave up way too much control.

Oh, well, what\'s done is done. Besides, it isn\'t like all this BOINC-ing around is a nuclear war or anything.

Cheers, all.

I restart BOINC 6.2.16 by going to a command line (run as administrator under Vista) and type net start boinc and it works.

Ah, I finally get this one... The reboot is only needed when you upgrade for the first time from BOINC 5 to BOINC 6. After that, use the methods MSeery is saying that can be used.

When I read Les his request elsewhere, I thought it was to do with the upgrade from 5 to 6. My mistake at the false answer, sorry. :-)

That\'s good to hear; I wouldn\'t want to install v6 if you had to reboot Windows to start the BOINC manager.

Still, I will wait until my current WU is complete, then change the backup procedure.
