Hi

I have a Quad core Xeon computer that I would like to use for the BOINC project, but it is located behind a firewall and a need to download tasks etc. to an older and slower single core computer and manually move the files.

The problem is that CDPN/Boinc thiks that I will not be able to complete the tasks, because they only see the old single core.

How can I bypass this? earlier I was allowed to download two tasks, but now I can only download one (and I need four to utilize the CPU)

Best Regards
Anders

Boinc Manager, Advanced , Preferences, have you in Processor usage switched on all four processors? if not, then do so.

Hi
Thank you for your quick reply.
All cores are enabled, but I am downloading to a single core CPU and then moving the files to a Quad core CPU. CDPN will only let me fetch one unit - a Quad core needs four units (one for each core) -

The latest versions of BOINC don\'t allow you to fetch more work per project than the project limit, which in cpdn is the same as the number of cores. Even Suspending a model in the hope of getting a new one no longer works.

And then there\'s the limit-per-day, which is deseigned to prevent a \"grab/crash, grab/crash\" situation.

Next is the problem that the server knows the specks of each computer to which it sends each model. Transferring a model to a vastly different computer can lead to problems.

The intention and design of BOINC, is that each computer needs internet access of it\'s own.
This can be gotten around in some cases, but not I think, in your situation.

Hi
No, that was also what I expected, but thanks for your help.

I don\'t understand why the quad\'s firewall is a problem. We all have a firewall running (I hope!). If necessary you should be able to permit BOINC to go through the firewall by modifying your firewall options.

Probably a company firewall which only allows access via port 80.

Bob, you could get enough work downloaded to the single-core to keep a quad busy by attaching to several projects. It would be best to set your work buffer to the maximum 10 days (BOINC Manager > Advanced > Preferences) and to go for projects whose tasks have long deadlines which would save you from moving the BOINC folder round so often. When all the short or shortish tasks from other projects get onto the quad, they should spread out and use all the cores.

I think it\'s also possible to make the server think a computer has more cores than it really has by editing the number in a line in a CPDN file in the BOINC folder.
