Do you mean in your BOINC manager? To change the language in BOINC manager, open the Advanced menu and in Options select the language you want. Then EXIT completely from BOINC (File > Exit) and restart BOINC for the change to take effect.

Let us know please whether that works.

In your account you might like to change your name to something more memorable.

Actually, it is something that has been happening to me, for months, on various projects. It must be a common problem as Spinhenge has a place on the main page to force a language - where one of my computers had everything in Russian and another in Spanish. In Cosmology, one of my computers has everything in German and another in Spanish. Other sites show French.

At times, when I check my account, on some sites, I get partial English/German and usually Chinese/Russian - not all the time, but often enough.

I can get by with a western character set but Cyrillic and Asian characters are annoying.

Anyway, it has never happened to me at CPDN/SAP but constantly does at other sites. Always to Windows based computers, not with Linux - yet.

This is a common problem; I get many sites turned to Japanese, and there is rarely a way to force it to English. The reason is that these sites are sniffing your IP address, and then determine the \"best\" language to serve you. Obviously they are wrong many times, but they won\'t let you change the language manually.

I have not seen this behavior on the BOINC or CPDN sites, so I\'m not sure what the OP is referring to.

Administrator, could you please tell us what version of BOINC you have? You can see the version by right-clicking on the BOINC icon in the system tray (notification area) at the bottom right of the screen, then selecting About BOINC manager.

Chinook, can you tell us what BOINC Windows version(s) you are certain this has happened with? Do you know if this problem has been reported and discussed on any other forums?

If anyone knows of any BOINC project discussions of this problem, it would be very helpful if they could provide links.

BOINC is not, as far as I know, supposed to select the default language for a computer by identifying the approximate location of its IP address. Even if it did this, the localisation menu should still work in BOINC v.5.

Some of the languages in the localisation (=languages) menu only produce the default English version, or a different variant of the same language, because no translator has sent in a translated version for the language or variant requested by the user. I think that where most of the text is in another language but bits and pieces are in English it\'s because the most recent translated version received by Berkeley was out of date at the time that BOINC version was released. What I\'ve said in this paragraph may explain a few anomalies, but it doesn\'t explain the problems Administrator and Chinook have reported.

Edit: Something I should remember but can\'t. Do we select our personal default language when we download/upgrade BOINC?

I suspect that the 2 people with problems are talking about this (forum) site as viewed with their web browser, not when using BOINC.
And no, there isn\'t an option to select a language when installing BOINC.
I think that it gets this from the computer, but I don\'t know how. Lots of possibilities.

Mea Culpa. I apologise as I assumed it would be a natural assumption I was referring to that displayed within the web-browser - mainly Firefox for me though I compared and it also happens with MS Internet Explorer.

I am using 5.10.45 but it started with the previous version 5.8.?? but never before that. I mentioned it at a couple of the fora where it occurred and sent the admininstrators a private message but never had any comment or reply. I thought of maybe asking in Pirates as Doctor Meyer seems to be involved in the BOINC code but as I get by, I never bothered.

Not that I am aware of though I select English [U.K.] and not English [U.S.] when I set up the o/s on my computers even though I do not reside in the U.K. though do within the Commonwealth.

Thanks for the info, Chinook. So as far as we know it\'s only Administrator who\'s had this problem within BOINC or within CPDN.

If it is the web browser rather than Boinc, then it might be useful to know the following:

* Which web browser do you use, and which version?

If IE 6, and you select \'View / Encoding\', what is selected option? Does it work better if you change it?

If IE 6, and you select \'Tools / Internet options / General / Languages\', how many languages show up in the list? Try removing any that you don\'t read. You can adjust the priority of languages by using the move up / move down buttons.


Naturally all these options are completely different with different versions of IE, and different browsers.



If you look at the language options on your PC as well, that may help.

Control panel / Regional and Language Options:

* What languages are listed on the \'text services and input languages\' page?

* Is the \'location\' appropriate on the \'regional options\' page?

* What is listed on the \'Advanced\' page?

I not certain if you are referring to me or making a general statement.

As for web-browsers... always the latest production release of Firefox (and I.E.) - not beta versions, except for Hardy Heron (no real choice there).

As for languages, always English U.K. though Microsoft attempts to force English U.S. no matter which my choice is. I can assure you there are no Asiatic languages installed nor are any of the Cyrillic-based languages.

As Spinhenge has a forced language selection on their main page, it must be a known problem for them - likely within the German world of MS Windows and BOINC.

A curious anomaly that I live with - though why mixed English/German/Spanish & Russian/Chinese is interesting and occurs more frequently - usually on my account page.
