The Sunbelt (Kerio) Personal Firewall that my computer runs has a \"behavior\" log which discloses:

(1) BOINC Manager for Windows starts (starts execution).
(2) BOINC Manager for Windows launches BOINC Client.
(3) BOINC Client starts.
(4) BOINC Manager for Windows launches BOINC Screensaver.
(5) BOINC Client launches hadcm3trans_5.44_windows_intelx86 (according to Process Explorer, hadcm3transnum_5.44_windows_intelx86 is a \"child\" process of hadcm3trans_5.44_windows_intelx86 but the firewall behavior detection system doesn\'t record its launch).

Note that the firewall log does not have a line which reports that the BOINC Screensaver actually starts (i.e., executes), as it does for the BOINC Client -- only that the BOINC Manager for Windows launches the screensaver.

First, AFAIK, I have never actually seen the \"BOINC Screensaver\" and/or it apparently never runs in a context in which the Windows XP screensaver actually does run.

Second, from what I\'ve read around here, the BOINC screensaver slows the processing of the climate model, so the screensaver should not be run.

Third, I have yet to find and read any information or instruction as to how to stop the BOINC Manager for Windows from launching the BOINC Screensaver. I cannot find an \"option\" or \"preference\" to do that, neither in the software interface nor for \"your account\" online. I might be able to do that by modifying the current behavior rule that the firewall has on record for the screensaver itself, i.e., to deny the screensaver from starting. But I don\'t want to do that if it will cause a problem with BOINC.

Can you offer any advice?

Run BOINC as screensaver? is one of the questions asked when installing BOINC. (At least as \"Single user\"; I\'m not sure about as \"Service install\".)

Otherwise, it can be run/stopped from:
Right click on Desktop
Click on Properties
Click on Screen Saver menu
Click on BOINC in the list of screen savers to start it, none to not have any SS

Info on this has been posted before, in reply to a question about it, in the same manner as this post.
There\'s no official \"faq\" style info, because once BOINC is installed, it\'s a Windows matter.

Les, thank-you for the information. BOINC is indeed listed as a choice on the selection of Screen Savers (tab) for the desktop properties. I\'ve rarely looked at the list since I chose to run Mystify soon after buying this computer in Sept. 2003.
