Message 32986 - Posted: 16 Mar 2008, 8:12:47 UTC

I´ve been running for quite a while now and has gotten many many results with my Q6600 CPU running at 3.2GHz. My credit is excelent.
However now I´m looking at my Result page and under \"Client state\" it says \"Done\" everywhere. BUT: under \"Outcome\" it says \"Client Error\" on every result except 5. Why?? Does this mean I have done all this work for nothing? Please help.
Example of such result: Result ID: 7281654 Work Unit ID: 6142343.
Example of a successful one: Result ID: 7286981 Work Unit ID: 6142876

You can normally ignore the status reports there. They are designed for other projects and do not accurately reflect the status here.

Hmm ok. But to me it seems that the searching only is usefull if I get the status \"Success\" there. Like I have only gotten 5 times. Doesn´t \"Clienterror\" mean that there is something going wrong with my client during processing? ...thus making my searching useless?

Hi,

The important thing as far as the climate projects are concerned is to progress as far as you can within each climate model - 100% of the way through is best, but not always possible :-) In your case, it looks like there are some steps you can take which should help significantly.

I\'ve looked at a sample of your error messages, and the vast majority seem to be exit code 1073807364 (0x40010004). This exit code is associated with the following things:

* Vista shutdown

* Closing the graphics too quickly (for example, while \'not responding\')

* or Graphics drivers.

What I would suggest is firstly to always exit Boinc (right-click on the icon, \'exit\') prior to shutting down Vista. Secondly, don\'t use the screensaver (set to \'blank\'), just use the \'show graphics\' when needed, and finally if neither of these things help, to update the graphics drivers on your PC to a more recent version if there is an update available. There is a setting you can change in Vista to make the system shutdown less violent.

There is a \'Vista\' section in the \'crashes and other problems\' readme - the link can be found in my signature.

-Cheers,

Mike

Thanks alot! :)
I will try all those steps.

Just wondering: Can the graphics driver have impact on the result even though I´m not using any screensaver at all at the moment and I almost never display the graphics in BOINC, I just let it run silently in the background/systray 24/7 and almost never reboot my computer. Thought I will close BOINC manually b4 reboot in the future :).

If a graphics driver isn\'t up-to-date (which is sometimes the case even with new computers), this can crash models. For members not sure how to get these updates which are free over the web, Thyme Lawn explains how in item #7 of the README about Crashes and Problems.

In the same README, item #6 by MikeMars lists all the usual problems and suggests solutions.

DIM, it\'s a good idea to regularly back up the complete contents of the BOINC folder so that if a model crashes we can restore a backup and continue processing the same model. This is the only way to continue a crashed model. There\'s a choice of simple and sophisticated backup methods in a README collection.

HADCM models send files to the server at the end of every decade. This data is used by the researchers even if the model doesn\'t complete. And some crashed HADCM models are sent out to other computers for completion. So CPDN tries to minimise wasted computing time when models crash.

Computers should be rebooted after exiting from BOINC at least once a week because they accumulate errors and problems.

Just reviewing all the errors on the ones done on your account, and they all seem to have the 107xxxxxxxxxx error. This is usually a hardware error of some type. As explained by others, it can mean bad shutdown, bad video, etc. But there may be other issues.

I see you are using Vista, and you upgraded to SP 1. Vista is an animal in of itself. Recommendation is not to install in the Program Files directory. I see you are getting errors that suggest it is in this area. Please stop BOINC, go into add / remove programs and remove. Then make a directory specific for BOINC (I made a whole My Programs area where I install all my programs that will allow me to). Copy your BOINC folder and all subdirectories into this new area (or you can just copy them to the root C:\\BOINC). Then download and install BOINC over this new folder. See if this helps some of your issues.

Other concerns with this error is overclocking (or other processor issues), memory issues, etc.

I would do the Vista fix first. If you still get errors then I would do some hardware testing.

Tnx for the help ppl :)
I have now done all the changes suggested by u ppl, and also read the readme. I´m running some tasks and are waiting for BOINC to finish. So I just have to wait and c. :)

I´ll be back with the result.

...and now I´m back with the result! =)

Success!!! :)

I did all the changes...
*Installed into a directory outside Vista \"Program Files\" folder.
*Installed latest BOINC version.
*Installed latest graphic drivers.
*I now always close BOINC manually b4 restarting computer.
*Also added the reboot delay in case of forgetting to close BOINC.

If I had more time I would have done the changes step by step to find out what factor that actually made the difference. But since I´m to lazy... I did them all and it worked, so... ;)

Thank u all for the help!
Cheers

Congrats! Feels good to finish one, huh?

Some of us have finished a few dozen successfully. It still feels good to finish them.

The researchers at Oxford and Reading Universities are putting all three current types of model to very good use, so every extra completed model adds to the database.

Did you get a reply to this question, I have the saem problem. 35 results no creit. An error every time?

I am thinking of withdrawing from this project?

The models have failed with \'107-errors\'. Methods of avoiding these are described in the README posts - have a look at the \'crashes and other problems\' section.

Special care needs to be taken with laptops, where hibernation mechanisms of various types are used - best to quit BOINC manually before closing down or hibernating. I quite like using laptops for simulations as they\'re low power and effectively have a built-in UPS; but they do need an extra bit of attention.

As you can see (from a later post in this very thread), D_I_M did manage to successfully resolve the problem:

As Iain says, the readme file should hopefully guide you in the right direction. In particular I would recommend:

* Don\'t use the screensaver (set to \'blank\' instead by right-clicking on the screen background, properties, screensaver, \'blank\')
* As he says, exit Boinc before shutting down or hibernating your PC by right-clicking on the icon and selecting \'exit\'
* Try updating your graphics drivers to see if a more recent version helps. To do this you first need to find out which manufacturer made the graphics chipset, and download any (free) updates from their website.

I\'ve also had \'Client error\' messages, the latest on 14 March for a project which had been running for about 8 months (result ID 6685813). I back up fairly regularly using CCEbu.bat, but it seems to have been this which caused the model to crash as the backup file of the project in question was timed the same time as the result. Is there any way I canretrieve the lost data?

I\'ve now stopped running the screensaver and will exit before shutting down.

You appear to have two models running: 7340333 (HADCM3-coupled) and 6977062 (HADSM3-slab). The slab model is almost finished, so it may be a good idea to let that run to completion. Make sure the \'no new tasks\' button is pressed in BOINC Manager, so that you don\'t get any new models. The coupled model has only just started - you\'re in for a long haul with that one, since it\'s a 160-year model running (hyperthreaded) with the slab.

The other model you mention, 6685813, is also a coupled model but has made a bit more progress. It\'s reported as crashed, but there is a temporary problem on the Web site that is hiding the error messages - so we can\'t tell what caused the crash. It should be possible to restore it from a backup and continue.

If I were you, I would:

1) Press \'no new tasks\'.

2) Suspend the coupled model.

3) Let the slab model finish.

4) Resume the coupled model.

5) Forget about the crashed model.

However, that\'s just my opinion!

PS If the two computer records on your computer page (here) are actually one physical computer, then it\'s a good idea to \'merge\' them - see the \'merge this computer\' link at the bottom of the computer summary page for each computer.

Many thanks. I\'ve done all that (I had actually already merged the computers). If you find out what the error message was, let me know if there\'s anything I can do to retrieve any lost data or restart the project. I won\'t use the backup facility in the meantime.
