My wife has a new laptop with Windows Vista that I have BOINC running on.

This computer has lost 2 CPDN models when she shut down the computer. Because this is her computer she dues not shut down any thing that I have running in the background first. The oldest model was only run for 4 days so I did not have a weekley back up yet. The account for that computer looks bad as there are 4 phantom models (never sent) listed.

Are there and settings that I can change to stop it from lousing models when she shuts it down? I have never seen any. Due to this not being my computer (have permission to run BOINC) I an not always there to do things correct. Not her project so no taking care of it by her.

One good thing with that system is that Vista requires you to give BOINC permission to start when the computer is restarted. I did not like that at first, but it is good as when she takes the computer out someplace BOINC dues not run and/or ruin models. Than it can be started at home again for a few days. It is also set not to run when on battery power. When she gets it home and plugged in I restart BOINC.

I never had a problem with BOINC and CPDN when shutting down an XP system.
Here is a link to one of the crashed models. LINK

Wish that SAP still had work, completed 19 models there, they took being shut down good.

Ray

There is indeed a registry setting to make Vista slow down it\'s shutdown, I don\'t recall the details though. I\'m sure someone will provide a link shortly :-)

Thank you Mike, I will watch.

So far I don\'t like Vista, but have not had to much time to learn the differances to tell the truth. That is only due to all of my systems haveing XP on them. I like the idea that many security problems have been fixed on it. I may put XP on her notebook as no personal data will be keep there.

Hi,

I found a relevant entry on the Boinc FAQ (it\'s a useful resource, worthwhile browsing).

Mike, even if Vista is instructed to shut down more slowly, is it guaranteed that the model will always survive the computer being shut down while boinc and the model are still running? I would have thought not and that sooner or later even a slower shutdown will catch the model at bad moment in its processing. (Would lead to an error code 1 crash rather than Ray\'s -107.)

Ray, slowing the Vista shutdown is a very good idea, but can\'t you also teach your wife to right-click on the boinc icon and select Exit before she shuts the laptop down?

It\'ll solve many (not necessarily all). The Vista shutdown is far more aggressive than the XP shutdown.

Ray. Make sure you\'ve got BOINC somewhere besides the default c:\\program files directory. I use c:\\boinc.

The shutdown thing is hit and miss. I just brought a new computer online running Vista (don\'t ask me how badly I want to put something else on there) and in my blind clicking (whole interface is in Korean and no way to change it) after running the updates the computer rebooted. I didn\'t lose any work. Now I\'ve had the same thing happen in the past (dumb dialog box stole focus as I was typing) and the computer rebooted. I lost nearly 80 hours of work in that reboot.

Hmmmmmmmmm... maybe it has something to do with the amount of work put in. LOL. The more work you\'ve put in, the more likely the result is to get trashed.

[edit]Gah... edited to make the slashes go the correct way. My muscles are now trained to put the other ones like I use in the Linux shell.[/edit]

I made the changes to delay the shutdown of Vista, think it will stop some and cause others. Seems as if it depends on whare CPDN is when the shutdown occurs. To bad that CPDN will not just shut down and later restart from the last checkpoint all the time.

Another thing that I hate is having to give Vista permission to start BOINC each time. Found a cure for that but no access to the computer for now (in use by another person), will try that later.

If there is no important personal data on a system I think that going back to XP may be easier.

Found that networking it to computers running XP can be a pain but can be done even though it dues not like it. Now to get it to use a network printer on an XP network server.

Kath
Having that in Korean would be a nightmair for most of us, at least you know some of the language.

I hope that those 80 hours were on CPDN whare you at least get credit for the trickles turned in.

mo.v

I shut it down on my systems before a system shutdown, but she is still learning the few programs that she uses. I always get asked how do I do this and that, adding another thing in will just get her lost.

The climate program WILL do that.
It\'s when BOINC gets confused about what has happened, thinks the model has crashed, and removes it from it\'s \"To Do\" list.
Then it has no knowledge that the model ever existed, so it CAN\'T start it again.

You could make a batch file to shutdown BOINC first and initiate Vista shutdown after that.

Why re-invent the wheel, here\'s a link to a message describing the process.

http://einstein.phys.uwm.edu/forum_thread.php?id=6114&nowrap=true#76797

Add a bit of class to the shortcut by assigning it a custom icon. Right click the shortcut, click [Properties] and select the [Shortcut] tab. Click [Change Icon] and select from the icons that are displayed.

Tell her to use the shortcut to shutdown the computer

Hmmm, used an no longer used userid to post in here I see. Pity, I can\'t merge it with the one I\'m crunching with now.

Which is this one:

Usernames aren\'t unique sadly, so you\'ll see loads of people with the same username crop up. \'Administrator\' is one of the most common. It\'s also quite easy to create a second account by mistake, if you use multiple email addresses, which is what I\'d guess happened to you.

There\'s no way to merge accounts together. What I\'d suggest is randomising the username, email address, and then logging out and log in with your current user instead.

Ray

The simplest solution is for your wife not to run CPDN because it only happens to CPDN. I found that SETI, Rosetta & WCG all close down in time, for example.

Get one, or more, of your other projects running on her machine and increase the priority of CPDN on your machine(s) to compensate.

I also found that User Account Control was a pain, but I have now disabled it. With other projects, there shouldn\'t be any need for BOINC not to run when she uses it away from home

Cheers

Mike

Transient\'s idea is fairly simple to set up and also easy to do at shutdown. The shutdown delay is also quite effective.

It doesn\'t ONLY happen to CPDN. I lost a QMC and a Predictor work unit in the Vista shutdown. I believe I\'ve also lost a Cosmology work unit at some point in time due to the Vista shut down.

It just hurts a lot more to lose thousands of hours of work, which is why good backups help. Heck, it hurt to lose those 80 combined hours from QMC and Predictor.
