its jay back with another question. What does it mean when the screensaver reads (2.93 s/TS)? Should this stat be higher or lower? |

The 2.93 s/Ts means that the simulation takes 2.93 seconds of computer time to complete one model timestep. Each model type typically has different timestep. The coupled models (HADCM3) actually have two kinds of timestep: an ocean timestep that corresponds to one hour of simulated time, and an atmospheric timestep of half an hour. So, for the coupled model, one day of simulated time takes (24 x 2) + 24 = 72 steps. A value of 2.93 s/TS for a coupled model doesn\'t look too bad. A fast machine might do 2 s/TS. Note that the s/TS isn\'t real time - it\'s the amount of time your computer spent running the model. If you want to speed the model up in real time, then you need to give the model as high a percentage of the processor time as possible - then computer time will be more like real time. The first thing to do is actually a don\'t: don\'t have the screensaver on! Use the graphics button in BOINC Manager when you need to see what\'s going on. Good luck, Iain |

Hi, I maybe on the wrong \'thread\' but I really don\'t know how to change it. I am new. Two models were downloaded, both started to run okay but then one stopped (6hrs 4imins) it has not restarted and I am up to 59hrs run time on the 2nd model. Is there something wrog or will the model eventually restart. Do the models slow down, as model Hadam3 is at 13.3% in under 60hours based on this total run will be 450 hours not the 750 hours stated. Is there something wrong. Any help would be appreciated. Linda |

Hi Linda, welcome to the message board. BOINC has downloaded two HADAM3 models onto your PC; there is no report of either of them having crashed; one is trickling nicely. Though they don\'t take that long to run (two weeks or so) they do need a lot of memory. Your PC looks rather like my home PC, which is a 3 GHz Pentium. Those PCs report that they have two processors, but in fact they have only one physical core with two \'hyperthreads\'. The hyperthreads give about a 20% improvement compared with a similar processor without hyperthreading. If the processor was genuinely dual core, then you would get about twice the work out of it. There isn\'t a fixed rule about this, but I wouldn\'t attempt to run two HADAM3 models hyperthreaded. BOINC may have come to the same conclusion and paused one of the models. I would suspend one, let the other finish, resume the suspended model and run that to the end. However, if that\'s what you want to do then you need to make sure BOINC doesn\'t download any more models, so go to the \'Your account\' menu item to the left of this page, choose \'General Preferences\' and set the \'On multiprocessors, use at most\' to 1. Are both models listed in the BOINC Manager Tasks tab? PS The estimated completion times sort themselves out eventually. |
