Dear all - sorry to ask such a basic question but can anyone tell me where to find my General Preferences so that I can tell Boinc not to use my CPU when I\'m working? I found a Preferences setting in the simple view of the Boinc Manager but Boinc doesn\'t seem to pay any attention to the values I put in for CPU usage etc. I\'m using a PC running XP. Thanks, Alexis

Hi Alexis, welcome to the forum.

See the menu on the left-hand side of this page? Click on Taking part in CPDN to open the submenu. Select Your account and you\'re there. While you\'re on the preferences pages you can if you wish also select the type of model you\'d prefer to receive after completing your current one.

After changing a preference, in your boinc manager you need to click Update with CPDN highlighted to tell the server about the change.

Any other problems, just post back.

If you have used the \'simple preferences\' dialogue, usually this overrides the settings from the website. I think there\'s a button on the simple prefs dialogue to revert to the website settings?

Your machine might be underpowered for running CPDN Models. Expect it to take a long time, even if you run the machine 24 hours per day, every day.

Looks like the box has on-board graphics. Running the screen saver is specifically not recommended; getting the latest graphics driver is (see README section).

Probably a laptop, which can be a problem for cooling. It\'s recommended that the case be elevated above the surface -- more than the little fold-down feet. These Models drive the CPU to its maximum. The good news is that disk activity has recently been reduced, a boon, especially to laptop Hard Disks.

Regular backups are recommended. (Again, described in README.)

The work can probably be done with that machine, with perseverance and care. Welcome aboard, and best of luck with it.
