Largely thanks to our team leader doing some major crunching in CPDN recently and increasing our RAC (recent average credit), we've just overtaken Team CF to get back to 22nd place in total credit, a position that we had held for a very long time until quite recently. And it now looks as we may rise even further very soon! ;-) Well done IanB and everyone else - everyone's contribution helps the team - and, more importantly, the project! Visit the Scotland team |

Hi Bad news (maybe). Once I've completed 30 models in progress, will be bringing to an end 7 years of running Climate project models. About 1,750 of them! Reason? Computer upgrades. Recently upgraded motherboard and CPU in PC 1. For faster and more energy efficient processing but reduced to a 4 core CPU only. Furthermore, only 2 cores are available for CPU projects as the other pair are dedicated to my main GPU project - GPUGrid. Am in top 30 IN RAC and top 40 in total credits out of over 18,000 users. Indeed, GG has been my no. 1 project for some time. Later will be upgrading PC 2 for the same benefits of faster proceesors and lower power costs. Therefore, will be down from an original maximum of 16 cores (models) in 2 PCs. Or from 12 since it became mandatory to dedicate a CPU core to each GPU (have 4) in GG. The CPU is required to "feed" the very fast GPU processors. Plan to switch the eventual 4 free CPU cores to POEM and WCG only. Both generate very short work units of a few hours instead of days or weeks with CPDN. Decision also partly based on inconsistent availability of CP models as well as what would be a higher productivity (throughput / turnaround time) for two worthy projects. Anyway, 7 years of CP is no bad. :) Cheers, Iansm |

Hi Ian We will be sorry to lose you, particularly when you've contributed so much. I have one usable GPU in an 8 CPU-core computer. I've never run GPU Grid; instead, I use the GPU for Einstein GPU tasks. Each task uses .2 (one-fifth) of a CPU core to feed the GPU. I thought this would reduce the number of CPU cores available for CPDN to 7 but was surprised to see the GPU task crunching alongside 8 active crunching climate models. I think the GPU task must be taking 20% of one CPU core without stopping the model from running, or tiny amounts from all the cores in turn or at random. In spite of the massive amount of work the computer's doing it doesn't produce enough heat to keep me warm in this little office. Cpdn news |

Sorry to hear that too, Ian, but you've made a huge contribution to the project already, as mo.v says. Not to mention all your great work on team Scotland's stats pages, thank you ;-) The team is up to 21st position in total credit for CPDN today http://climateapps2.oerc.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/top_teams.php?sort_by=total_credit&offset=20 - well done, everybody! Team Scotland seems to have acquired a new member and, as usual, I can't work out who it is! I'm sure someone will enlighten me - meantime, welcome, whoever you are, thank you for joining the team and happy crunching! ;-) I'm sorry the "Oxford boards" have run into problems and had to close down, hope that will be resolved soon. I'm sure someone will enlighten me - meantime, welcome, whoever you are, thank you for joining the team and happy crunching! ;-) Missed new member myself. Don't check Scotland list often - only to see if I'm ahead of IanB ! Will know next time I do a stats update as it picks up the join date. BTW, a change of plan. I'll continue to run CPDN until I complete 2000 models so it will be a few months esp. after reducing available CPU cores to 6 from 12-14 after upgrading my second machine. Quicker cores though so probably equivalent to 8-9 of the old CPUs. Cheers IanSM |

No new member detected ! Hmm, we've got 119 members and I thought we only had 118 last week, perhaps I'm misremembering? Delighted to hear you're going to keep on crunching CPDN tho ;-) Visit the Scotland team |

We have had 119 members since 23 Nov when Colin Neill joined. Mind you, 118 does ring a recent bell. ?? Anyway, the stats actually pops-up a message when someone joins or leaves (and pauses the script) so could not miss that. Unless stats app is flawed. Getting a bit creaky in its old age! Any new revamp of the CPDN stats pages ( there was a rumour last year) then I'm afraid our version won't be adjusted. My programmer's brain cells retired a few years ago! IanSM |

Maybe someone went away and came back again or something? But perhaps I just got it wrong - that does happen!! We now seem to have lost the Scottish forum as well as the "Oxford boards" - they're the same type of forum, so perhaps they have similar problems :-( I'm missing both anyway! Also, I've just completed another model and there's currently no work from the project :-( On the plus side, I see that team Scotland is ranked 12th in RAC for CPDN today, is that our highest position to date? We're still 21st in total credits. Visit the Scotland team |

Wow! We're at 11th in RAC today, probably partly as a result of no new work having been available for a bit. But I - or rather my computer when I was busy doing something else - downloaded and started another model this afternoon ;-) So presumably others got new work too, which will no doubt affect the rankings. It was a small release, so unlikely to generate much competition. Congratulations, and keep up the good work, Scotland! By the way, the link in my footer no longer works but it continues to lurk there while I maintain hope for the php board's restoration --> but I think it is a vain hope. The General Register Office for Scotland has published lists of babies' first names in Scotland for 2012: http://www.gro-scotland.gov.uk/statistics/theme/vital-events/births/popular-names/babies-first-names-2012/detailed-tables.html You have to download files for the various lists, which make fascinating reading. I mustn't reveal the depths of my prejudices regarding some names except to lament the pervasiveness of the Americanisation of popular culture and the general lack of Scottishness. So I won't list which names in my opinion confer on their infant recipients the heaviest burden. One interesting fact there is that in 1900 in Scotland the top 10 boys' names and the top 10 girls' names constituted 68% and 58% respectively as a percentage of all names. In 2011 the equivalent percentages were 13% and 15%. Cpdn news |

hi the new member was Hexen from Thailand unfortunately although i wrote to him/her on the same day they joined they never downloaded work or got back to me :( as far as the project is concerned i'm having all sorts of problems with this FORTRAN error that errors out a huge amount of the models i download for some reason I've had cases where because 4 or 5 models error out due to FORTRAN errors only 3 or 4 out of the 8 models i could run on one machine actually crunch while waiting days for the next models to show up for download so that i can crunch on the full 8 until some of those error out :( its quite annoying to have errors through no fault of your own but even more so then have to wait days to replace the models which have crashed don't understand why if it is known that there is a FORTRAN error with a specific type of model why they are being released to us in the first place anyway i'll get off my soap box now lol best regards Ian OH by the way our team is ranked 10th in RAC today highest rank in cpdn ever I think ? I do remember the good old days on the BBC project where we were ranked 3rd :) ----> Please Join team Scotland HERE |

Goodness, what a lot of posts in here all of a sudden, nice to see! ;-) I'm missing both the Oxford boards and the Scottish forum and I wonder if they're both afflicted with similar problems, since they're both php boards? Nice to see you, IanB, and great that we're at 10th today, hooray! mo.v, interesting post - that used to be even more the case in the Scottish islands, compounded by the fact that a lot of surnames were the same too. Don't know if it's still the case today but, when I was a child going to the Isle of Harris every summer, people either had nicknames (Mary the milk, Peter the shop) or were identified by the forenames of their father and grandfather. My dad had a nickname (because he was originally from the small island of Scarp) and so did his father, because he was blond, but my mother didn't. So I had to tell people (in Gaelic, which I don't really speak but I had to learn that much!) either that I was the daughter of John from Scarp, or of John-blond Norman, or the daughter of Flora-Murdo-Donald (mother-grandfather-greatgrandfather). I think that kind of nomenclature happens in Scandinavia too. And thanks for encouragement, astro! I'll keep my fingers crossed for the Oxford boards :-( Visit the Scotland team |

hi, Ian thanks very much for the heads up seemingly the people at server HQ had to give mine a bit of a kick for some reason but all is well now fingers crossed :) as far as the stats Ian yours are way more accurate than the ones on the CPDN site which are pretty much a mess and make no sense at all I crunch alot more daily than you and yet you have the higher RAC by some margin plus if you look at the BAM statistics monthly report and divide that number by 28 days to get what should be your average everybody on the project is only getting half the RAC they should be maybe the RAC is now calculated over 2 or 3 months now instead of 1 as it used to be OOPs said I was off my soap box earlier best regards Ian ----> Please Join team Scotland HERE |

Ian, Depends how many CPU cores you are running 100% bearing in mind that GPUs will grab one or more cores. Here, my recent rebuild of one PC has now reduced CPDN units to 3 (i5-3570k without HT) from 7 (i7-950 with HT), GPUGrid using the 4th/8th cores. Even 2 GPUs share only one CPU for GG but other GPU projects seem to need one each (as I have recently confirmed). So I'm crunching 10 cores compared to your 14? Is that what you have worked out? However, the Ivybridge i5 is quicker anyway (e.g. regional models take just over 1 second per time step compared to almost 2.5 seconds with the other rig - an i7-920) so perhaps I'm crunching more like the equivalent of 12+ 1st generation i7 cores. Minimal overclocking here as well. Do not worry. My second rig will also be rebuilt with a second Ivybridge i5-3570k very soon. So you will become the main cruncher again for the team! Will finish remaining work units over next week so back to another waiting period which will be ably filled by WCG again. :) IanSM P.S. Suggest any continuation of this stuff is better done over in our forum now you have discovered it has been down for a few days ! |

Hi Ian, I know what you mean about the GPU projects stealing cpu cores my second 920 box only crunches 7 models as the gpu steals a complete thread for itself my first box i don't use any gpu work on so it uses the full 8 cores when the FORTRAN errors don't decrease that figure good to hear your updating its always good to get your hands on shiny new equipment i haven't done so for a while now ( maybe treat myself at some point ) think your twin i5's will out crunch my twin 920's by quite some margin so the race to be top team cruncher might be a lot closer than you think lol I do like to come in here and make sure Margaret doesn't feel shes holding the teams thread all on her own but your correct in saying now the teams forum is fixed we may as well use it :) best regards Ian ----> Please Join team Scotland HERE |
