Message 38707 - Posted: 14 Jan 2010, 12:35:55 UTC - in response to Message 38665.

I don\'t often remember to look at \"User of the Day\" and I\'m so glad I looked today because today\'s UotD in CPDN is Iain Inglis!

A little message arrives from BOINC when the moving finger stops - the French page is rather swish though.

Swish indeed - I like that page because, if I forget to check User of the Day for a while, I can still see any of our team that I\'ve missed. ;-)

Many congratulations to RRodway, who has just passed the major milestone of 2 million credits in CPDN. He just missed reaching 1 million in BBC because no more work was available, so it\'s great that he\'s now reached 2 million in CPDN. ;-)

Hmmm, the Scottish forum appears to be off-line this evening - I\'m already suffering withdrawal symptoms!! ;-)

We have a new member in CPDN, Cecil from Germany. Weelcome to the team, Cecil, many thanks for joining us, and for adding your impressive credits to our efforts! Happy continued crunching and we hope to meet you one of these days either in one of the climate forums or in the Scottish forum. ;-) (which, by the way, I was able to access again very soon after my previous post)

And, now that the team stats have updated with Cecil\'s credits, team Scotland has suddenly shot past 35,000,000 credits in CPDN - thanks again, Cecil! ;-)

Congratulations to Lockleys, whose recently-completed 60-year model means he has now completed a half-century of climate models in total! And also good luck to him with the team\'s last two 160-year models, which Ian\'s stats pages are now showing as likely to complete before the end of this month!

We\'ve got more cold and snow here this week, but we nevertheless extend a very warm team Scotland welcome to Debbie, who signed up for the project some time ago and has just joined our team. I hope we\'ll meet you soon in one of the forums, Debbie, and please don\'t hesitate to ask if you\'re having problems with the project. ;-)

Congrats to Debbie on her first trickles (or \"tickles\", as we tend to call them in team Scotland!) ;-)

Nobody seems to have found a good word for trickles in Catalan so some of my team members call them triclets. Perfect as it sounds like a native word. A good tongue-twister would be un triclet, dos triclets, tres triclets.

Congratulations to Lockleys for completing his 6th and the team\'s 168th long 160-year model.

Just one more 160-year model remaining for both Lockleys and the team. Expected to complete within the next few days.

Thanks, iansm. Your post was v quick. The result hasn\'t even uploaded yet, presumably because it too needs the uploader.oerc server. I reckon my last 160 year CM model should complete on Saturday. (Fingers crossed). Hope there are still scientists out there to whom it will be useful.

The later HadCM models were for a different experiment about mitigation scenarios so I think it will still be useful.

The final HadCM file will only upload if uploader.oerc is fixed. See the file list in the news thread.

Update: The final 160-year model has been successfully completed by Lockleys - so well done again!

So Scotland end up with a total of 169 x CPDN + 101 x BBC = 270 (very) long models that have been processed over the last 4 years!

Congratulations, Lockleys! And well done to everyone who stuck with all those 160-year models - quite an achievement for team Scotland, considering that most of us had never done distributed computing before (or indeed even heard of it, in some cases!) when we started out in the BBC project. ;-)

If you\'re quick, you can snap up some new short-duration (about a week on my machine) models that we\'ve been playing with on BETA. They\'re called FAMOUS and are looking at volcanic influence amongst other things, pretty graphs along the way. You might have to update your preferences to get these. Currently each is a 200 year block but ultimately build to 1000 years as the final upload of each can be used as a start position for the next.

Still a couple of 1000 of the 200 year segments left in the pool. Some are crashing with negative pressures, though.

I took 3 yesterday, one failed with that reason, the other 2 are running very nicely. Seriously quick (0.17 s/TS).
Estimated at slightly less than 4 days completion in a 3.2 quad.

Great game to watch the clouds moving (like time lapsed filming) and the counter rapidly ticking over!

Negative pressure reminds me of early HADCM3\'s in CPDN and BBC also faling for that reason.
Later versions were sorted out to eliminate the problem. No doubt similar fixes will be applied
to these new boys then everyone should be happy.

Ye, a deadline prompted a slightly premature release to the masses. Most models are fine but a few dodgey ones have slipped through with the negative pressure error. We\'re testing the next version but are having to sacrifice speed for stability. \'Twas ever thus, I fear.

Second that - stability over speed every time.

Keep up the good work in Beta, you and all the others. :)
