Do you think that it is safe to put Boinc on the D drive with my FAT 32 system on it and it has 2.1Gig used and 4.80Gig free. Also, if Boinc crashed on the main drive, would the computer be a giant paperweight?

That should be fine. Boinc crashing shouldn\'t affect your PC.
