I\'ve got both a CPDN and a seasonal attribution WU in progress (or at least I had), when I upgraded to the lattest BOINC version from one I downloaded last year. Anyhow, some stuff came up, which left me rather busy to keep up with it, so BOINC was left to itself.

Anyhow a recent format/install (BOINC installed on an external HD which is unaffected by this), and now an update for this, my projects folder itself is completely gone. I have backups (though they aren\'t absolutely current on their place in the WU are present. However copying these over, and getting attached to something would be a first issue.

Had anyone run into the last upgrade wiping their old projects? Perhaps if it was upgraded on a new install where it wasn\'t running before the upgrade?

Are they still using the same file structure, so a simply copying of the backups back in should work?

It would be good if I could resume these, as a fair bit of progress had been made. I\'ve never had an issue in the past with a prior upgrade of BOINC (including accross installs) would affect the projects in this manner (as if it wiped the directories and began again); but this time, it\'s as such.

Upgrading BOINC versions doesn\'t do this. In fact it\'s famous for not doing it.
There are only 2 situations where an upgrade will cause a problem:

1) Upgrading from 4.19 or earlier (a one piece BOINC), to 4.25 or later (2 piece BOINC), without first uninstalling the older version. This will leave you with a split version; e.g. 4.19/4.25 for the 2 parts.

2) Upgrading from the special BBC version 5.3.19, which installs into: C:\\Program Files\\climate change experiment, to a newer version, and chosing the default directory, which installs to: C:\\Program Files\\BOINC.

In neither case are the science app folders/files touched.

That\'s what I expected; but not what I\'ve seen this time, though it is what I\'ve seen previous times so was expecting to occur again. Based on my seasonal attribution return, it\'s seen that I reported a trickle in this month (hadn\'t with CPDN yet, because I held off all other projects to make sure that reports in, and with a lot of playing World of Warcraft and given how CPU intensive that is, I suspended all CPDN projects while that was playing).

I was, admittedly surprised to see my project folder completely empty when installing 5.8.15 on top of the older version which was probably something like 5.0.x... Also surprised to see the n00b mode on the user interface, but got the old back going to advanced. This said, I hadn\'t gone from a Vista beta install to an OS downgrade (to winXP Pro) on reinstall; but wouldn\'t expect BOINC to care, as it\'s it\'s own system.

Not sure how it happened, as this one is a new one to me, but what was, was. What I\'d like to know is if it\'s possible with the project folders only, to recover these units. It would be good for the project, if the units are recoverable, can be completed...

I\'ve never seen this behaviour apart from cases where the installation folder had changed.

No chance that you\'d used the -d flag previously to get Boinc to put the project files elsewhere?

You could try searching all your hard disks for (some file) just in case.

Nah, it was installed to the same foloder (browsed down), and just downloaded it from web, and chose to run, rather then save the thing. I haven\'t seen this either. Tried copying the directories back, register first then copy them? Or will I need new WUs?

Seems contradictory. Never heard of \"chose to run, rather then save the thing\" working; seems to be your problem. The client is meant to be installed in, and run from, a folder where it has access to all the control files and sub-folders it requires. Otherwise, Windows\' Registry has no idea what\'s happening.

I think he means the installer file rather than the boinc manager executable. i.e., right-click on download, \'open\', rather than right-click on download, save, run.
