my prject was running fine uP until 10 hours ago when it stopped saying waiting for memory. Another project which was downloaded at the beginning along with the other project has now started up. I have suspended that task but the other task is just sitting there saying \'Waiting for Memory\' Can someone explain what this means? I am running on Vista O/S with 1 GB of memory and there is always at least 60% of memory availble for use at all times. I have run the BBC climate change software previously without any problems. When that was closed I removed BBC software and downloaded the latest BIONC software. Help! |

Hi, and welcome to the CPDN side of the Project. None of my machines use Vista, so I can\'t advise about that. However, I understand that it can chew-up a lot of Memory for some its services. That could be part of the problem. Does the problem occur when you have other jobs or games running? There is a new memory-limitation setting in Preferences in 5.8.n boinc versions, 50% default value, if I recall correctly. Still, it shouldn\'t be a problem, except for CPDN\'s SAP Models. It\'s a shot in the dark but it might be worth a try: Raise the % value a bit (example copied from my Preferences): Use at most Haven\'t seen many posts by folks claiming to run Vista and most (perhaps all) of them have 2GB RAM. With luck, someone with Vista experience on a Dual Core or HT machine with 1GB RAM will weigh-in. Hi, and welcome to the CPDN side of the Project. Mine it a HT processor - and I have been running the BBC version on Vista with no problems at all until their projects finished.I found the BBC version ran better on Vista platform then it did on my XP Pro setup I had previously. How do I get to the % thing you are refering to to adjust the memory require of BIONC 5.8? Is the Preference set by the BOINc website? Thanks for your information and reply to my post. |

Click Your Account in the blue area on left of this page. Preferences section: General preferences, Click on View or edit Click Edit Preferences (Bottom of the page) (Adjust bottom entries in Disk and memory usage section, as desired) (While there, best to set Do work while computer is in use? to yes, if not already set to yes. [Top of page.]) Click Update Preferences (bottom of the page). In boinc Manager, Projects tab, highlight CPDN and click Update. That forces a connection to the server and the changes will be downloaded and set automatically by boinc. If something isn\'t clear, please post questions. I now have the same message - \"Waiting for memory\". Running XP Pro. Machine has been rebooted after closing down Boinc manager. Problem there before and after reboot. Only Boinc and IE applications running. A look at performance manager shows very few memory page swaps, methinks there is memory available. Boinc manager does not report normal \"Task xxxx restarting\". There are no further tasks queued on this machine and so no work being done. I\'m stuck :o( Any suggestions? Thanks Phil S Running 5.10.7 |

This version of BOINC has an option to limit the amount of memory that BOINC is allowed to use. It can be adjusted in General Prefs on your server Account page. Also, 5.10.7 has been \'recalled\' with a serious fault. Nothing official, but I\'ve heard that it can delete all of the icons on the desktop. Backups: Here |

Thanks for reply. Having returned to look at the model I can see that it \"found\" the memory 15 mins after the reboot. (nothing else running). What may be of interest is that on first bootup this morning I lost all icons on desktop and when \"3 fingered salute\" used, Task Manager reported no tasks. Possibly coincidence but .... Thanks again, Phil S |

Also, 5.10.7 has been \'recalled\' with a serious fault. Nothing official, but I\'ve heard that it can delete all of the icons on the desktop. It may be causing explorer.exe (the windows desktop) to crash. It does not acutally delete anything and restarting the computer will fix it. However even though it is a fairly rare occurence this is a serious enough problem to recall the version. BOINC WIKI BOINCing since 2002/12/8 |

It happened to me on the E6600. No icons, mouse active but couldn\'t bring-up hidden Task Bar. CTRL-ALT-DEL brought-up Task Manager which showed a 99% idle machine and no hint of CPDN or boinc. Re-boot from Task Manager set everything right again. Stopped CPDN and boinc. Put 5.10.7 in the toilet and restored 5.8.16. (Install over 5.10.7 failed to produce a usable boinc inststallation. Deleted boinc from Win/Add-Remove, the old way of doing things, installed 5.8.16 and all was well.) Seems to be a consistent set of symptoms. Unfortunately, 5.10.7 is default download version on this site. [Edit: I\'ll ask Milo to look at this Thread and perhaps fall-back on the default download.] "We have met the enemy and he is us." -- Pogo Greetings from coastal Washington state, the scenic US Pacific Northwest. |

Yes, I think you should definitely contact Milo. Astro, you have a much wider repertoire of skills and tricks than me. How did you reboot from Task manager? I can\'t find anything to do with rebooting within it. I have XP. Cpdn news |

Yes, I think you should definitely contact Milo. CTRL-ALT-DEL brings up a window, which you can go to Task Manager, and reboot from that, or just reboot from that menu. |

Similar: when I installed 5.8.16 over 5.10.7 it failed to install fully. But I did the install of 5.8.16 a second time (this time using the Repair option) and it completed OK. |
