Hello,

I have been running a project for quite a few months now and it was almost 30% complete. However it disappeared from the BOINC manager Work tab and a new one has been downloaded.

Can someone please help me to see if I can recover the original one please.

If you have a backup, yes, you can try again.

However, no backup, no chance.

The error:
No heartbeat from core client for 31 sec - exiting

BOINC thinks your model died and dumped it.

You\'re running an old version of boinc: 5.2.13. Could be part of the problem. Wouldn\'t hurt to upgrade.

This bit worried me more than the 31 seconds heartbeat timeout:
set_worker_timer(): timer thread not working
Fatal crash! :-(

In the days of Windows 3.x and 9x, timers used to be a finite resource and they could run out. Never seen it happen with XP though, guess something bad was happening to the operating system at the time (perhaps it could have been part way through a system shutdown with various system services closed when it wanted to be given this resource).

There was also an exit code 0, which is associated with the task being killed (sometimes via system shutdown, or task manager\'s kill process).

The usual generic advice applies:

* Take a backup at intervals (you can restore from the backup if needed)

* Suspend Boinc just before playing games or doing something intensive with the PC such as video encoding

* Right-click on Boinc and \'exit\' just before system shutdown

Bummer!

Oh well back to the drawing board. I wasn\'t backing up but will do so from now on. Is there any plan to build a backup function into BOINC in the future?

Yes my system has been playing up and I\'ve had to do a few aborts using the task manager. I think the issues were cause by some system tune-up software that I trial installed. I\'ve removed it today and everything seems OK again.

I\'ll upgrade BOINC.

Thanks anyway.

No immediate plans for auto backup to be provided by boinc. But there\'s a choice of backup methods in the Backup and restore README here

You have to back up the entire boinc folder, not just the model, and exit from boinc before the backup.

Backups shouldn\'t be part of an application, but part of a general system safety and security measure. If all application came with their own backup software, your system would grow double in size.

One professional backup software (e.g. Acronis True Image), or even Windows\' own backup tool should let you do all the backups you need.
