The BBC version of the ClimatePrediction experiment is now closed to new participants:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sn/hottopics/climatechange/moreaboutexperiment.shtm
http://www.bbc.co.uk/sn/hottopics/climatechange/moreaboutexperiment.shtml

If prospective new ClimatePrediction members follow the links there to the big green download button, they will find that it now downloads the standard version of Boinc (from the Boinc team in Berkeley CA) rather than the special BBC version.

They will then need to attach to the project using Tools / Attach to Project, and enter http://climateprediction.net as the project URL.

See http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/index.php for more information on attaching to the project (follow the \'download\' link).

Downloading the standard version of Boinc and attaching to climateprediction.net (the \'parent\' project) is a good thing as it means that new members won\'t need to migrate from one project to the other later on.

Members who already have the BBC/CCE version of boinc installed will, when their current model finishes, still receive a new BBC model for the time being.

Could current and prospective members please post discussion and queries about the migration in this thread.

Just a reminder that the News and Announcements section of the php forum is the best place to see essential announcements in a single thread:

http://www.climateprediction.net/board/viewforum.php?f=36

as well as the 4 README compilations which remain an essential source of information.

It would help to spread the news about the stage the migration has reached if members who post on team forums could copy my top post there.

I\'ve been late to discover this, sorry. I have a question that would be of interest for stats sites: Will credits gained through BBC/CCE be moved to the main project? I don\'t hope so, as it would be a ton of work on databases, but if that is the plan, it would be nice with a heads up ;)

Will credits gained through BBC/CCE be moved to the main project

Yes
No
Maybe

It\'s still being discussed, but the consensus of opinion of the BBC crunchers is that they want their credits etc copied across.
If they are, then it will probably be based on cpids, and won\'t occur for some time yet.

PS
Bruno. Could you please post something in the shout box at BOINCstats to say that the cpdn beta site is NOT a new public project.
It\'s just a test site for stress testing new types of models before they\'re released on the well known public cpdn site.
There will be NO export xml files, and everyone running models there are expected to report ALL failures in the appropriate OS section, including all error messages, and hardware details.
And they should keep reading the site messages, as new versions/models are constantly being made available as bugs are reported.

Thanks

To sort of add on to Les\' notes about migrating over, I had a brainstorm to move credits over. The next stats run should do this.

It\'s linked by cross-project-id so you have to make sure that they match on each project (go to \"Your Account\" here and on the BBC Expt site to make sure). If you used the same email addresses in both places you\'re probably fine.

The BBC credits (and \"classic cpdn\" credits also) will be added into your user total, and they will propagate to your cpdn team (you have to make sure you have the right team setup). This gets run nightly along with the regular stats calcs, so you can update your cross project id & team at will and see the changes within a day.

What happens with those running BBC now but not the main project, and now or later decides to run the main project?

No kidding :D Just noticed unrealistic jumps on many team mates, including myself - so I\'m working right now to filter BBC out of boinc combined, but then I noticed one who was only crunching for BBC... Boinc combined for him is zero at the moment. Don\'t know yet how many crunch for other projects but not cpdn main - they\'ll loose some credits until I know how to deal with this.

Well, all I can add is \"if it ain\'t broke, don\'t fix it\"....

What IS the point of migration? Why not just leave the BBC project (and the stats so generated) as separate entities?

Is there any REAL benefit to combining them....? I can see lots of reasons for leaving the CPDN projects as they are...apart from the fact that nothing needs to be done (although that maybe too late now, after what happened this evening....).

regards

Tim

I also think something isn\'t quite right with the credits merger. I just noticed a drop of 5 positions in my sign-up date group even though almost nobody is active 5+ places above or below me. More importantly, my sign-up date is long before the BBC project ever started...so how did the credit merger affect this?

Classic CPDN was also merged in, so those people who did Classic got a boost.

well none of my changes are irreversible. but the stats sites should be getting xml from the main cpdn site that has the bbc credit filtered out (except for team #\'s). perhaps the best thing would be for stats sites to just use the combined cpdn #\'s (and I\'ll change the db_dump/xml for cpdn to have the combined totals). it\'s not like we\'re actually the 3 separate boinc projects anyway; so it probably makes sense to do it via the one main cpdn project.

That should work if they just take a combined total and use that :) Expect to hear more complaints though from the top team in certain projects as the fall back spots (if they do)..
I think one project is the best idea myself as everything is still ongoing.

Things should stay the same, keep each stats for each CPDN project seperate, if you want to combine them on CPDN then do so but just list it in a persons account rather than including it in the XML, it has messed up BOINCstats big time & more than likely BOINC Synergy too.

This is from Willy @BOINCstats

@carlc: Why did you do this? The credits will never be lost on sites likes BOINCstats. It will just cause a lost of work, just to filter out the credits from those two projects. And what about those who never crunched the main project?

I\'ll take the trouble of posting here myself.

I think it is totally unnecessary to merge the credit in the main project. The credits will still be on the users BOINC account on sites like BOINCstats and Boinc Synergy, as it always has been.

But it looks like the harm is already done.

This means I will have to make major changes to update scripts to prevent BBC and SAP credit to be included into the total credits, but there still should be a link the the individual projects, so it has to be included on another level.

I can\'t say I\'m really happy with this, and I\'m considering to just drop the two projects from BOINCstats as that is the easiest one minute solution I can think off. But it will bring forth many complaints from users.

I urge you to reconsider the merge, and educate the SAP and BBC users on the existence of the stats sites, and where their credit has gone.

Without the merge the stats for SAP and BBC will be on BOINCstats for as long as BOINCstats exists, and the credit will be included into the BOINC total for the same time. The credit will not be lost. This is the way BOINC credit should work.

I was just about to post about this, but Willy beat me.

The \'Oxford people\' only visit these BOINC boards when asked to do so by a moderator, so it would get a quicker responce if those with concerns posted on the php board here.

The only reason for all of this is the BBC people, who just don\'t understand about projects in the big wide world.
They\'re been complaining for a couple of months now about \"losing\" their credits when they move, and mumbling about just leaving.
They are proving hard to educate.
I\'ve gotten at least one to sync her cpids, and she is quite happy with the combined results on BOINCstats. Now for the rest of the UK.
