I remember reading somewhere, that you can set Boinc to not ask for more work after a Work Unit has finished. I can\'t find this setting anywhere. I am running Boinc 4.19. Juuso More ideas like distributed computing... http://www.easydonations.net |

If you do not want to upgrade right now, you can download BoincView, which has the ability to tell 4.19 to stop asking for new work. |

Note that 4.19 isn\'t compatible with the climate model at the moment anyway (trickle-ups and whatnot). So it\'d be best to update to 5.4.9 (or 5.6 which will be out any day now). I'm a volunteer and my views are my own. News and Announcements and FAQ |

Use Windows\' facility to uninstall boinc 4.19 first, else you\'ll have a mess on your hands. (Once you get to 5.x.x, it\'s not necessary to uninstall prior to future upgrades [unless the rules change again].) Use Windows\' facility to uninstall boinc 4.19 first, else you\'ll have a mess on your hands. (Once you get to 5.x.x, it\'s not necessary to uninstall prior to future upgrades [unless the rules change again].) Will I lose the unfinished work unit? I have 20.5% done of \"sulphur_cycle 4.22\". Or can I somehow save the work and continue it with version 5.6? Or should I just start from scratch? Thanks. PROVIDED that you use Windows Uninstall first, you\'ll have no problems keeping your current model. But sulphur? Really. These were a short term (3-4 months) project to get starting values of sulphates for the Coupled Ocean models. Which started as the BBC project on 14th February, and about 3 weeks later here at Oxford. Your computer time would be more productive running the new TCMs. AFTER you upgrade BOINC. |

Ok. So do I just ditch the current model and start something else? Preferably something that doesn\'t take ages to finish, because I don\'t use the computer that much these days... If you wish, you can continue with the sulphur model. The project has reached it\'s finally stage, and the latest models are 160 model years long. They take about 3 months on a P4 3.2GHz computer running 24/7 with no other projects. There is a project with shorter models, but that\'s been running since the start of the year, and will finish in about 3 weeks from now. There is a list of other projects from various countries here. The work units from these will take from a few hours to a day or so to run. |

This is a further query about something I\'ve asked about in the message boards, but it looks as if this is a better place to discuss problems, so apologies for repetition. I have BOINC set not to get new work just now, because I want it to pick up again on a WU (ResultId 5719246) that finished prematurely when 84% done. I have copied this unit back into the directory from back-up (thanks Mike Mars for advice), but when I did so found that there was no existing project file, although there were several others that have failed to complete previously. I copied in the back-up just after upgrading to version 5.4.11 (using the Windows \"Install/Uninstall\" procedure in Control Panel)and wonder if I somehow managed to get rid of this project file at the same time? At any rate, although the project file IS now in the BOINC directory, it doesn\'t appear in the BOINC manager screen. I tried unchecking \"Read Only\" in the folder file Properties in Windows Explorer, as recommended in another post, but it has made no difference. Somewhere a while ago I came across a discussion of when a project is truly defunct and incapable of being resurrected, but I can\'t find it now. In \"My account\" the server state for this WU is \"over\" - does this mean it can\'t be got going again? I have another 34% complete model (type hadcm3lbm),currently suspended. Should I give up on ResultId 5719246, the 84% one, and revert to the 34% one, or allow the project to give me an entirely new WU? I\'m not sure which is the best model to be running at the moment but gather from some of the discussion that some are more useful than others. Sorry to keep going on about this - I\'d really like to start getting some successful models again! Thanks! |

The BOINC client needs to know where the file is. There are several edits that need to be made to the client_state.xml file so that the client will know where the files are. I am sorry I don\'t have all the details. I have always just abandoned any models in similar circumstances, it hasn\'t seemed worth the risk to the other projects to try to recover to me. Thanks for that advice, that\'s what I\'ll do too. Editing the files isn\'t something I feel it would be wise for me to attempt! It would have been useful to know why the project file disappeared from the BOINC folder on this occasion, to avoid it happening again, but I\'ll just have to be more careful. |
