I just finished a Sulphur Modle - and a new obviously different model had been pre-loaded. Immediate fail with a file not found error - (have to) download another model - that failed - I reset the project, guess what - it killed the last part of the Sulphur results up-load. Max downloads for one day reached. Tried again later - next modle has failed in the same way - I am on a wet piece of string dial-up, this seriously takes time and disrupts my sufring and mail.

What is the way out, and can I finish up;oading my Sulpur results ?

If you have a backup made from before the reset, then, yes, you can recover it.

But you did tell the server to reset everything.
If you have a version 5.* of BOINC, hold the mouse pointer over the Reset button for a description of what it does.

I think that for TCM and onwards, version 5.* will be virtually compusory.
This is because the new models upload data files all the way through the model, unlike the old models where everthing was uploaded in one big surge at the end.
Only version 5.* has the facilities to do this.
It may also be why your new models failed to download.

Running BOINC 4.19 - The new (BBC) models do download they are hads3mxxxxx_5.08, but fail to run with the missing file error.

What do I need to do ?

I have downloaded and Installed the latest Boinc \'Manager\',

It realised that there was an earlier version and found the previously aborted Sulphur up-load results - 50 mins on my \'paying for\' dial-up !

Won\'t let me get a new model:

15/03/2006 13:42:48|climateprediction.net|Message from server: No work sent
15/03/2006 13:42:48|climateprediction.net|Message from server: (reached daily quota of 1 results)

(hmm .. just found out \'selected\' still copies everything to clipboard)

NO statistics (Yet ?)

WHY is my \'ZoneAlarm\' firewall continually wittering, but \'Networking\' isn\'t showing any traffic.

WHY was my Boinc client so old ?
WHY didn\'t it tell me there were updates ?
WHY didn\'t it update automatically for new models ?

WHY does it still NOT \'clean-up\' GIGS of historic results ?

I\'m feeling very, very, grumpy and my telco is all the richer for it !

BOINC doesn\'t automatically update, and if still \"usable\" will not tell you that you need an upgrade (although now that CPDN has moved to 5 only, this may change soon).

Histoicaly data was kept, because not everything was uploaded to the servers, and if they wanted to come back and ask for more from you, if you had it, they could use it. It can be backed up or deleted.

You failed too many models in a single day, so your quota went down to 1. This avoids bad machines from downloading tons of modles and destroying them, making issues all over.

The 5 version of BOINC Manager talks to BOINC via TCP/IP on localhost. So they are in constant contact with each other, so ZoneAlarm will blink like nuts. They did this so that you can talk to your farm via TCP/IP and manage all your computers from a single spot, without having to share directories, and stuff.

beteljuice,

Did you un-install 4.19 before installing (presumably) 5.2.13? If not you could have a mess in your CPDNboinc folder. (BOINC structure changed after 4.19.)

There is more than one way to proceed. Were it me, I\'d un-install boinc using the Windoze Add/Remove facility. Then re-install 4.19 and immediately un-install it. That should clean things up. Then, install 5.2.13; when your time in the \'penalty box\' expires, you should get a fresh Model and, all things equal, should run okay.

Sorry that I didn\'t get back to you earlier. I\'ve been busy on the other boards.
Just to answer some of your questions:

WHY is my \'ZoneAlarm\' firewall continually wittering, but \'Networking\' isn\'t showing any traffic.

It\'s detecting the 2 parts of BOINC communicating.
Version 5.* is totally different to the 4.* versions. The 2 parts \'talk\' via port 31416, which is on your local net. This is to make it easier for people running \'farms\' of computers.

WHY was my Boinc client so old ?

You didn\'t update it.

WHY didn\'t it tell me there were updates ?

It should have done this via messages in your messages tab.

WHY didn\'t it update automatically for new models ?

Because some people run multiple projects, and use optimised versions of BOINC; e.g. for SETI, where the credits are based in part on how fast the work units are calculated.

The application software is automatically updated, if and when new versions are available.

I wasn\'t aware of any, that\'s how I got to 4.19 and the the Sulpur model, I have been running \'climate\' since the early classic period.

So it won\'t auto up-date in the future either ?

I removed 4.19 via the \'normal\' Windoze method before continuing with 5.2.13 - new client and model seem to be running OK (finally after MANY hours of downloads), but further to the updates and messages thing - this new client doesn\'t seem to do anything with the desktop icon, or at least doesn\'t advise of messages like the old client.

If you haven\'t met the Manager before it takes some getting used to, but then we forget there was a time before it existed. Start with this page in the BOINC Wiki and see if it helps.

You should get messages when it happens, but I\'ll warn you ahead of time:
There will be a new version of BOINC in the not too distant future, which seems to be \'rather different\' to the 5.2.* version.

I think that it will be mostly cosmetic as far as this project is concerned, so no need to jump in and get it straight away.
It looks as though the descriptions of various parts have changed, some of which are going to take a bit of getting used to. e.g. \'Tasks\' instead of \'Work\'.
And the word \'credit\' will disappear. (Dives into the bomb shelter.)
