i used to run seti@home classic

it ran fine and didn\'t disrupt my computing life...

after i was forced to change to boinc i saw climateprediction.net

i joined and began running it

since then my computer lags terribly. switching between open running applications can be really time consuming (up to 20 seconds)

my hard drive light is regularly at full on

i am running XP pro on a 2.4 Ghz machine with 256 Mb RAM with over 11 Gb fre HD space

boinc 5.2.8

Get more memory. 512 is a recomended minimum for Climate.

I have all my CPDN machines with 512-2G, and they are fine. The slowest machine currently running CPDN is a Xeon 2.2G HT.

Well, 256MB memory is really not too much running WinXP! It is working but Windows has to permanently swap memory to you hard drive. If you are runing climatprediction besides some other applications, so the free memory is even more battled. CP.net applications are using about 50MB of your spare memory.

As the permanently swaping is fragmenting your hard drive very fast, you should defrag your hard drive in any case. If you can afford some more RAM you should buy and install it without hesitation! Its worth the money!

The best source for asking problems with BOINC and the ClimatePrediction client

I agree with Pooh Bear 27.
Your computer is being forced to use the hd for swap space each time it switches.
Ram is cheap, and with lots of it you can set: \"Leave applications in memory while preempted?\" to yes.

When using Windows defragmenter, make sure you suspend CPDN while defragmenting.

With 3rd party defragmenter such as Diskeeper you can set \'I/O Smart\', which does not require to stop CPDN.

Started with 256 Mb RAM

Cdn $89.00 (512 Mb stick) later my machine has 760 Mb RAM

runs like a charm - faster on all applications with boinc running, even compared to 256 Mb when boinc/sulfur model is fully shut down

this is indeed the answer

i had no idea XP was such a memory sinkhole...

----

i also changed \"Leave applications in memory while preempted?\" back to yes
