The program is stopping. Boinc says it is runnng but no calculations are occurring. It is really getting annoying because of scheduler is making it go too near to deadline. I have to no new work every other project and then suspend and resume cpdn to get it to work again. this is not a normal long delay in cpdn.

Are you using version 4.45 of BOINC? That would explain it as there was a bug which causes the problem you describe.

This is with 5.2.7.

I have the same problem:
CPDN runs 3 or 4 days without problems. Than it stops, processor is idle, but BOINC shows CPDN as active. Only help: shut down BOINC and restart.
Same Problem on 5.2.5 and 4.4.5. On 5.2.5 CPDN running alone and stops after some days, on 4.4.5 it runs with Seti and Predictor and stops also. My 5.2.5 runs on XP, 4.4.5 runs under Win2K.
I think, if it stops under XP and 2K, stops under 4.4.5 and 5.2.5, stops if it run alone or with other projects, than it would be an error in CPDN.

Normaly i would say: shit happens, but is frustrating looking every day for CPDN on a box that is locating in a dark little room.

As well as cpdn, there is another common factor: BOINC.
Perhaps your dark little room is too hot.
Have you opened the cases and cleaned the dust off the cpu heat sinks? This can drop the temps quite a few degrees.

It is winter in Germany and in the dark little Room are 17 Degrees Centigrade ;-) More cooling only possible on the loggia (-2°C)

I have the same problem, and I use BOINC 4.45, which I am afraid/don\'t want to upgrade while my cp work unit is nearing completion (nearly 70% done).

Sometimes it takes a while to start working again even if I close boinc and restart it (another issue is that sometimes there are two boinc icons in my taskbar, but this doesn\'t seem to be a problem).

I am going to two Buddhist retreats here in the north of Israel this Thursday, and want to leave it running on its own for 10 days, so my question is: I run a few work units from different boinc projects together, if cpdn does get stuck, and I\'m not here, does it automatically switch to other projects after the elapsed hour, even though it itself is stuck? what\'s your experience?

I could find this out for myself, but I don\'t know if it\'ll get stuck soon, and I\'m a bit lazy, anyway. I might be able to instruct my flatmate to check up on things, but I\'m afraid she\'s not very computer literate.

Thanx,

gady b

Version 4.45 had a bug which caused it to think CPDN was running when it wasn\'t. This typically occurred at five-day intervals following benchmarks.

The solution is to download the latest boinc version then Suspend, wait a moment for CPDN to stop processing, then Exit boinc. Make a full backup of the boinc folder. (I don\'t recall whether 4.45 is a version which requires un-install before installing the new version so, \"better safe than sorry\".) Install the new version of boinc and restart.

Your work should not be affected by the upgrade but you\'ll have the Backup, just in case...

I found CPDN stopped after the last weekend. Checking messages I found that BOINC was trying to run CPU benchmarks, but said it \"was unable to stop the CPDN application\", so it just sat there.

Check if you have any messages; this should give you a hint what\'s happening.

This happened to me on one host with BOINC CC4.19

After reducing OCing slightly, the problem didn\'t occur anymore.

It seems to be something unstable that affects only CPDN, the same host ran Einstein, SETI and FaD without any problems.
___________

BOINC doesn\'t see the problem as CPDN is not only one monolitic program but consists of compounds. The CPDN calculation core dies but the overlaying task doesn\'t recognize it.

As BOINC watches only the overlaying task, BOINC cannot see what\'s going on.

It would make sense to make the CPDN controlling task check the calculation task now and then or react to the signal about its crash, this would make it a bit more robust.

Otoh. the user needs to know that there\'s a problem so she/he has a chance to fix it.
___________

If it keeps happening, reduce OCing or try to set less agressive memory timings in the BIOS.

Good luck :-)
