The new BOINC 5.22 runs with constant network traffic. I don\'t see why these projects can\'t run without continuous contact with their home servers.

I tried to re-install 4.45, but 5.22 apparently did something to the data, because trying to run 4.45 gets a fatal error and the program doesn\'t start.

I\'m beginning to think that this project is getting too complicated for its own good. I\'m thinking of bailing. The problems we\'ve been having lately (especially with climateprediction.net and their lack of communication with the people trying to help them do their research) are becoming not worth my time.

Can you explain what you mean by \"continuous contact\".

I\'ve been running 5.22 for a couple of days now (and 5.21 before it) and it only appears to contact the server when needed - exactly the same as previous versions of BOINC.

I have \"Network activity suspended\" and yet the Zonealarm system tray icon and Overview page indicates traffic initiated by BOINC manager about every 2 seconds. No messages are reported during this time. Also an Einstein@Home work unit is listed as Ready to Report. I suspend all the work units listed and the traffic continues. Who could they be talking to?

Now that I\'ve read this thread, I see something similar on my system. Every few seconds the ZoneAlarm icon in the systray changes to indicate network traffic.

However, I cannot see *who* is trafficing. How do you know it\'s BOINC ? (When I open ZoneAlarm I can see four program icons: Gmail notifier, Generic Host Process for Win32 Services, VMware NAT Service, and another Generic Host Process for Win32 Services; none of them doing any network activities)

Both of you have more than one computer, so can I assume that \"network\" traffic is something talking to a router?
If so, what happens when you suspend and then exit BOINC? Still got \"traffic\"?

Just tested it; when I suspend and exit, the traffic stops.

For my part I have to say that it does not bother me.

P.S. I use only one computer; the second one was only used once to try to finish a crashed WU.

boincmgr.exe and boinc.exe communicate with each other via ports - could that be the traffic you are seeing? When you close boincmgr down, to the tray, does the activity continue.

When BOINC manager is in the tray, traffic still continues. In answer to another question, I know it\'s BOINC, because the BOINC icon on the Zonealarm Security Suite Overview page (on top) is blinking when traffic occurs. Suspending BOINC in the Manager\'s Command menu doesn\'t stop it. The only thing that stops the traffic is completely exiting the program. Les mentioned a good point. I do have a router and it may just be talking to it, though I can\'t imagine why.

I suppose this is just paranoia or nitpicking--your choice.

Thanks, everybody.

The manager and the core will still need to communicate even when the manager is minimized to the tray. Exiting the manager should end the extra traffic you are seeing. They pass messages back and forth every 2 to 10 seconds.

I think you hit it, John. I haven\'t seen such behavior before. I\'m not sure why they have to communicate over ports. If there\'s a link somewhere that explains more about this, I would be happy to have it. Thanks.
