Backup the whole BOINC folder. There are some BOINC files that log progress and you will crash if they get out of line with the application.

You need to stop processing before making the back-up to ensure that the log files Andrew mentions stay consistent.

The whole BOINC folder has to be backed up. Best to put the whole folder in a zip file. If you are using WIN XP that is built into the OS. WIN XP will not run the zip program that I used to use but what they have works good for this.

1) Suspend all programs from BOINC, I say this because sometimes BOINC will crash running things when exiting.
2) Quit BOINC from the menu.
3) Check the task manager to be sure that BOINC and all programs are out of the memory.
4) Create an empty ZIP file (any name you want to call your backup.
5) Right drag the BOINC folder to the zip file, when the menu comes up select COPY here.
6) After it is finished copying into the ZIP file you can restart BOINC.

Sorry about the long explaination, but others who have not used ZIP files may read this and a longer detail is better for them.

BACK UP TO CDR:

If is best to do the above on the hard drive, than burn the zip file to a CD. You can just burn a copy of BOINC to a CD, but if you have to restore from it you will have to change a lot of file attributes, the CD makes tham all read only.

BACK UP TO CDRW:

Same as CDR, but you can add more backup\'s to the same CD, and delete the old backups to keep using the came CDRW disk. You can also just copy the BOINC folder to a CDRW as the file attributes is not changes to raed only like on a CDR, but if you are running a SULPHER model it probably will not hold all of it.

DVDRW:
This would be the same as CDRW, but will hold a complete BOINC folder with a Sulpher model on it and still have a lot of room left for more things. This would be the best if you have a DVD burner.

I was pointed to this thread by mo v in another thread where I was asking about backups.

My question is, if you backup the entire BOINC tree, when you restore it, there will be some inevitable editing required of the client_state.xml file, (and possibly others, maybe the slots directories as well), so that the restore operation does not screw up the wu\'s of other BOINC projects running on the same machine.

I was after a definitive procedure for this.
