I\'ve been trying to get this solved for several days now. I just started using this software and am about ready to uninstall if no one will help. Whenever the software needs to communicate with the main server, I get an a message back as follows:

Can anyone tell me what is going on and how to solve it? I am using a 1.3 GHz XP machine with 128M Ram and using dialup. I set XP firewall off to see if that would help but it did not. Any thoughts???

When you attached, did you exactly copy and paste the URL and ID string? No trailing / in the URL, no extra spaces anywhere?

Hmm .. that's a weird one.

I have had similar experiences in the past when I cut and pasted the URL and account ID into the registration screen.

May be an obvious thing .. but try detaching from the project and then reattaching ... but check for leading or trailing blanks or other characters when you reenter the url and registration number.

Another thought is that 128M of RAM might be a bit light ... but I believe 64MB is still the official minimum requirement.

Message Type: Warning Message

This Message means that the BOINC Client Software was unable to locate the "Master Page" when using the Project's Master URL because of a network problem. There are many causes for this error, to include:

Complete networking failure
The Project's Web Server is Off-Line
The Internet Service Provider is Off-Line
The most common Error Codes encountered are:

Error Code Meaning
-106 ERR_IO, a failure to read/write from the Disk Drive, or in the case of network transmissions, a failure to send and receive data.
A failure to send and receive data to and from a Project Server generally means that during the transmission to or from the Project Server, or a router along the way has reset the TCP connection between the BOINC Client Software and the Project Server. This can happen for a number of different reasons, such as the Project Server being overloaded, or packets being lost in route.

Note:
This is the most common error after an outage of the Project.
-107 Cannot connect to the FTP site.
-108 The file is "open" and in use by another process, or write access to the file cannot be obtained.
-109 The file could not be renamed.
-113 Couldn't resolve hostname
404 Couldn't find the Web Page.
500 The Server experienced an internal error and could not process the request.

Because the message is entered into the log with the Project Name the Project's Master URL is not required.

This message tells you that the normal mechanisms that translate human usable addresses (like a URL into the actual IP Addresses that are used by the computers.
Couldn't read master page for '(project identifier)': error '(error-code)'
This line tells you that the BOINC Client Software was unable to contact the Climateprediction.net's Web Server.
Master file fetch failed
This message is telling you that the Web Page that is at the Project's Master URL was not available.
Backing off "x" hours "y" minutes "z" seconds on transfer of file '(file)'
The BOINC Client Software is going to wait for a short interval of time, calculated using the Exponential Back-Off. And in this case, the time is very short. Be advised that it goes up pretty fast!

In this log example, I tried to attach to a Project with a "bogus" URL, just to make this set of messages ... but this is still the error you would get regardless of the reason that the URL is bad.

The 113 error means that BOINC is not connecting to the 'net. It needs access via port 80, which is also the one used by browers.
As you have set the firewall to off, perhaps there is a permissions setting in XP that is stopping it.
Another possibility is a proxy server setting. This is explained in the FAQ, in the menu to the left of here.

And 128Megs of ram is the bare minimum to run. But it will involve a lot of swapping between memory and hard disk.
I think that this may be a leftover from the original, "classic" version, which was simpler. Even 256 is a bit low now.

But look into why BOINC isn't getting out of your computer first.
If it helps, I'm using dial-up without problems. And when I installed BOINC, Windows asked if it was allowed to access the net. (Or perhaps it was port 80. It's been a while.)

Just had another thought. When I unblock Boinc Network Access, and forget to dialup first, (as I did this morning, silly me, :( ) I get error 113.
There is a setting in your preferences about dialing. Is it set for manual dialling? If so did you dialup the net?

HI, had to select and OK this program from my Norton Firewall. Worked fine after that.
