I'm posting this so that other people with mysterious model crashes can be informed why.

AntiVir available from www.free-av.com causes models to crash. The only way to stop it from doing this so far is to completly UNINSTALL it. Disabling it will not work, you must UNINSTALL it. Below is a thread dealing with troubleshooting that lead to discovering this.
