Message 10264 - Posted: 2 Mar 2005, 23:22:13 UTC

I installed BOINC on my MAC yesterday. It has been communicating with scheduler: http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc_cgi/cgi, but I'm getting repeated -- Message from server: No work available (daily quota exceeded). My guess is that maybe I need to change some setting on my end. Any ideas out there? Thanks,

This is simple enough: your Mac is crashing the model before it has even really started.
There is a limit of 4 to prevent users doing this continuously. It's a hint that you have a problem.

WHAT is another matter, but it needs to be fixed.

As a starter, what version of BOINC are you using? If it is one of the test versions, 4.2n, then it was,
until a few hours ago, incompatable with CPDN. You may have better luck now, as Tolu did a fix on the CPDN app.

But if it's something else .....

Thanks, Les. It's 4.19. I've pasted a chunk of the message traffic from terminal window below if that will help you:

Judging by the benchmarks near the start, it's a slow computer.
And as you can see by scanning through the list, it seems to be in an endless loop:
Insufficient work, Requesting more, getting more. Repeat loop.

I don't know what the problem is, but you need to stop BOINC, otherwise you'll just keep wasting parameter sets.

MAYBE it's simply because the computer is too slow, but you'll need to wait for a Mac person to read this thread.

Slow? Judging from those benchmarks glacial is more like it. :)

No offense meant, but it would takes months to complete a model
run on a one-lunged processor like that. Really, only people
with a Ghz class processors should consider running the model, IMO.
It's slow enough as it is.

I had a similar problem after upgrading to 4.19 client.

I remember reading on other Boinc sites about similar problems.

I just solved problem by detaching client from project and then re-attaching. All seems ok now.

Hi Folks!
Fine if this worked for you, Steve. But my PC just won't do nothing - although Einstein, ProteinPredictor and SETI work fine...

Here's a little expert of my message log:

I almost forgot: I'm currently using BOINC 4.43 on (mobile) Athlon XP2800+ @2183MHz (266 FSB), 1024GB, Win2000 SP4 - dunno if this is important :-/

I'm afraid you are not the only one with this problem. A friend from boinc.cz just reported the same.

Perhaps database is full, perhaps Tolu is just doing work on database; who knows. The lack of any feedback from CPDN team is not a good one. I will give them a ring right away.

Well I'm a bit in the same problem.

I'm on a mono 1,8 G5 1,5 GB of RAM, I run BOINC 4.43, running the standard versions of the engine for the project save the SETI (using the G5 javalizard CLI 4.30 SETI Worker). BOINC processes SETI, Einstein and ProteinPredictor without fuss, but CPND ran only once, next time I restarted it nothing… I tried the detach/attach trick multiple times, it just don't work. And I have 2 models waiting :-/

In case I've repaired permissions too.

The copy paste doesn't work so I can't easily give you a snapshot of the BOINC bable. ;)

Welcome.

If you are running 4.43, is there any indication that you have entered panic mode where it works on earliest deadline first?

It may well be working on Einstein units to get them done by the deadline. After a while it will build up a negative debt and stop downloading eistein unit to give other projects a chance.

2 models rather than 1 is a bug in 4.43. I understand it may be fixed in 4.44. Anyway, don't dettach and reattach as this will not only scap any work you have done but will also mean you will wait even longer before climateprediction starts. You can delete one of the 2 WU if you want.

You may find that you can copy paste the messages from files in BOINC folder called stderr.txt stdout.txt stderr.old & stdout.old I suggest copying them before opening (or suspend BOINC).

> Welcome.

Thanks :)

> If you are running 4.43, is there any indication that you have entered panic
> mode where it works on earliest deadline first?

nope

> It may well be working on Einstein units to get them done by the deadline.
> After a while it will build up a negative debt and stop downloading eistein
> unit to give other projects a chance.

I'm crunshing fast and in fact I'll be done with an Einstein job every 2 days at most

> 2 models rather than 1 is a bug in 4.43. I understand it may be fixed in 4.44.
> Anyway, don't dettach and reattach as this will not only scap any work you
> have done but will also mean you will wait even longer before
> climateprediction starts. You can delete one of the 2 WU if you want.

I tried it to see if the fix seen around would work, it didn't.
In fact for some mysterious reason (no message telling so, no change in the computer, no more/less estate available -there's more than enough- etc.) It worked during the night. Now at last there's some signs of activity, but I can't decipher an objective reason. It looks like Einstein and CPND are having some pause/nap before actually getting into the job at last OR it thought to have sent a result and started out to work after that from what I read in the messages.

I'll look after this in the next days, I'll bother to copy the messages as you said in case the problem(s) comes back again.

> You may find that you can copy paste the messages from files in BOINC folder
> called stderr.txt stdout.txt stderr.old & stdout.old I suggest copying
> them before opening (or suspend BOINC).

By having read a bit the logs, it seems there has been some internal error.

I can't tell for the first tries before that, it's not clear. I'll keep a watch and will come back if it's twiddling its toes again or crashes. right now I've got a model at 8,18% so at last it's doing the job. we'll see.

I've got still to make my team move to BOINC… ;)

Thanks for the help.

Denis,
You appear to be suffering from a missing file problem on all of your failed models:

dyld: hadsm3um_4.12_powerpc-apple-darwin can't open library: /opt/ibmcmp/lib/libxlsmp.A.dylib (No such file or directory, errno = 2)

Read the post by Clay in this thread.

OOops I did read it before and did the trick but forgot the "lib" folder, so the path was wrong. I try it now :)

THANKS guys you rock :)

It seems to do the trick, it's painfully crunching now… ;)
