Hi all. I have a dualboot machine, running XP sometimes, and Linux sometimes. I would like to be able to run the same model regardless of what OS I have booted up, is this possible ? Anyone here do this ?
I guess that sharing the data folder shouldnt be a problem, maybe I can have the BOING folder on my fileserver (different machine), or maybe I can have a FAT32 partition that both OS:s can access....or...?

Thanx

Hi Ozric,

i'm afraid it is not possible.
I would suggest to run CPDN on as system that you use more often. If 50:50, the run CPDN on each system. It is known fact that Linux version is a bit faster than Windose.

Hope to help...

Thanx Honza. Too bad they havent made that possible...I wonder why, I guess the datafiles have the same format and such...it shouldn't need to be a big problem really to make that possible...
Another thing...I saw that you have a couple of 3 Ghz machines, Prescott CPU:s I assüme..I have 3 Prescott machines running, and they get so damn hot. ABIT tool reports up to 70 degrees...do you have the same ? Or do you watercool your machines ? :-)

It is not as easy as one may think. I'm not expert on this but there is a lot inside the code, including visualization, needs of different system libraries, different file handling etc. and, first of all - compiler.

Nope, not a single Presshot in my home :-)
I have tested some Presshot based machines lately, including 3.8GHz model...but are too hot with high power consumption + plus extra demand for cooling (noisy). Slow cache, long pipeline, expensive DDR2 (i'm used to 2GB RAM) etc. No thanks, i will wait for dual core CPUs before farther upgrade.
I've got couple of old good Nortwoods with air Arctic Cooling and couple of AMD64 (with same cooling).
A Pentium-M Dothan in desktop version is best choice for cold and low power consumption.

But there are people running both Northwoods and Presshots in their farms - naming astroWX just as one of them - with no problem as of cooling and with good performance on hyper-threading enabled (running two models at once).

There were nice threads about self-building of computer on classic phpBB forum, which is still shut-down. A thread of building dual-Xeon by UK_Nick with in-depth technical details and lot of nice photos is also deep buried there.
Let's hope classic forum comes back soon...

Well, I'm a programmer (do it for a living), and my guess is that the datafiles that the clients work with are the same regardless of what OS the model runs on,
the visualization is just eye-candy :-) generated by the client, and the libraries that are needed should not be a problem, they are client-specific anyway, and compiler should not be an issue either really. Correct me if I'm wrong here, I dont have access to the sourcecode for climate or Boinc so, wish I had :-)

I wish I hadnt bought the prescotts...:-) or I just might have to get better cooling and boxes for them...

Hi Ozric,
The running files seem to have have different naming conventions on the two platforms (although the server up/downloads seem to be identical) - Linux CPDN seems to stash extra data.

I suspect that it is largely a BOINC issue, actually. BOINC is structured in such a way that status files, project data files, etc are all contained within the BOINC directory. This isn't ideal, and I think there is a long term intention to enable these to be split. If this were done, the opportunity to structure the software for dual boot would presumably arise (though I am <b>not</b> a programmer, so may be writing rubbish). The issue is only important for CPDN though, so there are not enough of us for this to be a priority. In other projects the WUs are so small that there is no real disadvantage in having different sets of WUs for each OS.

BOINC is open source, so the code is available from the Berkeley BOINC site. CPDN isn't, and a million or so lines of code would be more of a challenge.

Just to add -

I seem to recall Linux, until just recently, having issues both writing &amp; reading reliably to shared NTFS files. IIRC, Linux could either read or write to NTFS, but not both, reliably. So Linux &amp; Windoze OS shared files were recommended to be formatted as DOS.

I think this has been finally addressed in one or two 'cutting edge' distros, either just released, or soon to be RC's.

If you want to share data between Linux and Windows you can use a FAT32 partition instead, using NTFS is not the recommended way :-), or use a directory on a file-server.
