Purely for fun of it I've reverted to crunching SETI@home classic for a few days whilst it's still alive - I do know it's mostly 'make work' averse to serious scientific processing but I do wonder what the turnover of my current farm will be.. :-)

Hmmnnn, 6x 10~12 results/day + 2x circa 20 results/day (? output from dual 3.3GHz 'Nocona' Xeons ?) = ~106 results/day -that's actually less than when I last ran classic SETI@home (~120 results/day) but that was running 11 machines, not 8.......

+++

Not that it has anything much to do with my temporary defection back to SETI@home classic but it does feel a bit odd to see my No.1 speed machine (AMD XP-M at 2.6GHz.) right down in 91st place in the 'top computers' list... :? 'Emma' is a bit 'previous generation' now but she's been dedicated to CP-boinc since it's inception. Methinks AMD XPs must lose out more than I originally thought running CP-boinc instead of classic CPDN... (Oh well, at least she's only munching 128Watts whilst she's crunching models, unlike my new Nocona Xeon duallies which are munching 320+Watts each........)

Heh -

Understood clearly & well.

So many of us started out our DC hobby by cutting-our-teeth on SETI, that it's kinda' like the DC equivalent of our first car, apartment, or g/f!!! ;-)

But then, I still sometimes reminisce about 'Classic' CPDN, its credit in MY's, and remembering how 3 good machines could put one solidly in the 'top 200'! :-0

Oh, those rose-tinted-glasses...

Have fun!

Well, I have to own up, however many years ago it was that SETI first started I too happily crunched away...and did so on and off until CPDN came along...

Heh, I've crunched a few WUs for SETI@home. ;-) I haven't even got that many cobblestones under SETI-BOINC......

"You have completed more work units than 99.876% of our users."

Ha, bet thats true for CPDN as well ;-)

Better watch out:

There's been rumours floating around that Nurse Olga has been seen around the CPDN neighborhood recently, observing some of us secretly, with that look in her eye.

Hah! I remember when she got selected for the SETI 'user of the day' profile!!! LOL :-0

99.91% according to BoincStats

>

Maybe, although DarrenofWestec has continued crunching Classic CPDN as well as BOINC and demoted me into third place in the classic CPDN stats. Oh well, I can't compete with a university full of computers. ;-)

I reckon I've completed roughly 180 models altogether now - the displayed classic CPDN total of 101 is incorrect by a fair number due to manual uploads - a manual count of the CP-boinc models I have completed now stands at 59...

+++

Heh, 'more than 99.91% of all users'. :-D With the current 'number of users' and 'number of hosts trickling' it looks as though you can hit a fairly high 'percentage of all users' by trickling just once - same as at Classic SETI actually, lots of folks sign up & download the software but never manage to complete a single work unit.

I discovered CPDN thanks to the Seti Classic web site.
Just for that, I like Seti and crunch a Wu from time to time, a kind of tribute even if I don't really believe in ET.

Heh, my 20 results/day estimate from Nocona Xeon duallies 'Caroline Nova' & 'Oony Nova' is a serious under estimate - they're both producing more like 34 results/day. (running the 'classic' v3.03 CLI client.)

NB: That 34 results/day is close approaching three times Emma's output of 12 results/day - thus Oony Nova (320Watts draw => 0.226kWh/result.) beats Emma's (128Watts draw => 0.256kWh/result.) energy efficiency - maybe CP-boinc needs to speed up the output from Intel CPUs even more somehow or other - 'Oony Nova' only produces roughly double 'Emma's' CP-boinc output whether she's running two or four models with HT enabled - two fast CPUs both chasing after the same memory bus and disk access I suppose...

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrggggggghhhhhhh - go away Olga..!!!

- OT -

FYI -

OK. This may be bordering on thread raising-of-the-dead (thread necrophylia???), and is pretty off-topic, even though it could possibly be argued there is a tie-in, since this is a BOINC forum, & BOINC could, in a way, be thought of as an outgrowth of the S@H project. I just didn't know any other place to post this, and some peeps may be interested.

S@NL (Seti Netherlands) has organized a final international SETI Classic gauntlet for the three week period, beginning 21 Feb 2005.

Fredsel has been kind enough to open up a section of the S@NL forum for public access (though I suppose one could "formally" register as a forum member, if they prefer). There's currently over a half dozen teams, representing probably several dozen countries, already signed up. If you'd like to participate: sign up as a member of an existing team - whether it be international or country-specific, add your current team, form a team, or run as an individual. The purpose is to have fun & enjoy some interaction with other DC teams from different parts of the world & different cultures, all sharing the same goal: The enjoyment of thier DC hobby, some friendly competition, & hopefully, the furtherance of SETI science.

If you started out your DC hobby in SETI Classic, as many of us here have, and want to have a little fun with one last short run amongst many like minded peers, this is the last chance before the servers shut down for good, and the show is over. If you've never participated in a gauntlet, you may find yourself unexpectantly enjoying the competition & comraderie, of a newfound activity.

I haven't yet decided if I'll join, but if I do, I'll be running under Ars-Technica Team Lamb Chop, and Ars-TLC (or any other team) would be happy to welcome any prospective participants. This is a form of inclusive competition, where the commraderie of entire group of gauntleteers, overides the competitive spirit of the individual teams. "The superset of the gauntlet supercededs the subsets of teams."

Here's:

The original org thread

The gauntlet thread (sign-up & discusion)

The gauntlet stats board

S@NL gauntlet public forum

FWIW,

Strat
