I've been running for 24 hours now and only have 1% complete is there anyway to increase this rate

There is not very much you can do with your present computer, unfortunately. You must console yourself with the thought that the program was written for a Cray supercomputer, and it is amazing that you can run it at all on a desktop machine.

The two main recommendations are not to use the graphics or screen saver except when you want to look at it, and not to leave BOINC open in the work or disk tabs, as they use some processing time.

I would think that with that system, it would take on the order of 60 to 70 days to complete the model, so running it continuously, it should do ~1.5%/day (+ or - a few 10ths of a percent). As Andrew said, the visualization software can be a CPU hog.

CPDN is not only dependent on CPU speed, but memory performance as well. I'm assuming you have PC133 SDRAM on that system running at 133 MHz?

Are you crunching any other project? If so you need to set preferences to allow the paused project to be kept in memory.
