I\'m stuck in a loop - every time I start BOINC I get these messages, and BOINC terminates.

What version of BOINC are you running?

CPDN requires version 4.02, and is not compatible with version 3.* None of the other projects will run with 4.02 yet, and you can only run one version of BOINC on a system.

Also, what directory did you install BOINC to? The same one as your other projects run from, or a seperate one? Did you uninstall BOINC 3.20 before you installed 4.02?

I found that the system would stabilize enormously by uninstalling 3.20, then installing 4.02. Detaching from Seti & Predictor also helped me.

I'm running 4.20 Core Client, and it's installed in C:\BOINC - the same place that 3.20 was installed. 4.20 happily reset all my projects and I have had one failed work unit upload and 2 download OK. It's either this upload or the new download that is causing an exception in BOINC, and causing it to quit.

I'll give a separate directory a shot

Strange things are afoot at the circle K:

Well I installed to a new directory but BOINC picked up my projects form the other directory (sigh) and happily restarted the failed work unit - thus no longer trying to request a new WU or upload the existing one and causing the error. I reinstalled BACK to the original directory and it again picked up at the beginning of the WU.

No, that behavour is normal. Neither Predictor nor Seti2 is onto this BOINC version 4.xx yet.

So if you want to crunch CP only, you need to detach from the other projects. That's bgest to do anyway, since CP will take a lot of time (up to 40 days on a P4 3.2GHz)...
you won't be able to crunch anything else at the same time.

I concur. While I was still a Boinc alpha tester, before the last major crash, I tried installing the V4.02 client into a seperate folder(C:\Program Files\Boinc Alpha) to see if the two clients could be run seperately, let alone together at the same time. The experiment failed as I thought it would. The registry entries seem to end up in the same files and caused no end of grief. I had to wipe both out and re-install a single client.

I think the install package puts in a registry key that always goes to the original install directory, even if you put in a new folder with a new BOINC. It resolves the "boinc_gui.exe" and "boinc_cli.exe" names -- I think you can rename and try it and it won't get the "old" version?

Well, there might be a trick to do - but be warner, haven't done myself since not interested in SETI and it's not 'by the book'. Just and overcome before SETI and Predictors are ready for 4.xx generation.
- install BOINC 4.02 version, copy to another location and uninstall
- do the same with older BOINC for SETI/Predictor.

BOINC can run on different machine (copy whole folder) so this one might work.
