I have downloaded my first WorkUnit. I have noticed it is going to take over 930 hrs to complete. Report deadline is end of July, 2005.

I think it is not normal.

I have the AMD 1,7 Ghz, 512 MB RAM

Sounds about right to me. I'm looking at an estimated 700 hours on a P4@2.0 ghz.

that's probably about right, 5 weeks for a 45-year (3 phase * 15 years/phase) run. For perspective, it is about 10 days for a time-shared Cray to do this model (the one we use at U Liverpool)

Hi gskoczylas,
I have almost the identical setup to you and it's reporting the same deadline and hours to complete. It's about 40 days running 24/7 and that's about what it took running the "classic" Climate Prediction model.

Moreover, I just joined the club, with my AMD Athlon 4 pwered notebook :( and it will take 1800 hours :) to complete the calculations.

My question: does it not setback or hinder the project?? At home I have a much better computer, but now I am working abroad... so is it better to give up?

The report deadline is one year, to allow time for slow, part time, computers.
The only thing that hinders the project is people with hardware that can't cope, who keep having model failures, and don't do anything about it.

There are several threads specifically for helping with hardware / software problems, so if you need help, someone will point you to them.

Yes, in the meantime I noticed the deadline date. Thank you for your kind reply, anyway. After returning home I will move to my desktop computer, of course. :)

Are you sure it's 2005, and not 2006?
