Message 5602 - Posted: 24 Oct 2004, 11:13:34 UTC

I am currently running, SETI, LHC adn now CP on my computer.

CP is the least highest project on my priority list and resources have been allocated accordingly.

However, I have downloaded my first WU and it says it will take:

716 hours and has a deadline of 6th October 2005.

IS this usual????? That is almost a year sized WU!!!!

Would appreciate any comments that can explain this!

Cheers

JR

You will need to give the computer a while to calculate an accurate estimate.

How long it will take in total depends on many things besides the speed of your computer - whether you leave your computer running all the time, whether you are running other BOINC projects, whether you use the screensaver or leave the graphics window open (that can consume a lot of processing capacity).

There is an explanation about the size of the WU here under 'smaller workunits'. The point is that CPDN is simply a different sort of DC project from SETI and others, so the time taken to complete a task will be different but the idea is the same, to use your spare computing capacity to do something useful.

Those hours are for your CPU running 24/7, takes a lot of crunching to complete WUWUs in this project........

Perfectly normal ... if you crunch 24/7 it will take around 5 weeks to complete one WU with your P4 1.9 GHz computer.

Happy crunching!

DC projects typically fall into 2 categories - computational analysis
(e.g cpdn) and data analysis (e.g seti) . WU's take longer to complete
in the former and so you'll get incremental credits before each WU's
completion.

Thanks to everyone who replied.

Very helpful indeed.

I have upped the share of resources to 20% for CP, leaving 30% for LHC and 50% for Seti.

Cheers
