It came out like a year or two ago, around the time that cpdn went to boinc. It mentioned statistics on how network computing can run faster then the supercomputers. I want to show that to the other students in a class of mine at college.

Sorry about being so vague about it. All I really remember is that it is one guy in a darkish room with a projector running behind him.

so when i take my A+ class and learn how to make a computer from scratch if i make a tower with say 10 opterons, i can have nine of them running wu's and the last one for me. I could judt use the computer like it was a single processor machine and ignore the other 9.

umm well if you dont mind the adverse side affects with doing this you could disable your internet and then enter taskmanager and start shutting down processes. the ones that you need are
boinc (this is the boinc cc)
boincmgr (this is the screen you see if your on the 4.5x, .6x, or .2x series.)
the apps for the wus. (these are easy the project names will be in them)
system
winlogon (you need this to be logged on)
explorer (i guess that you could shut this off but if you do your desktop and all your windows dissapear and you have to do a hard reset)
csrss
lsass
smss
svchost (there are a bunch of these. shut anyone of them down and the machine crashes)
most things will stay in the running processes from the start of your machine to the shut down of it but wont take any cpu cycles. even when they do its arelitivly small percent (1% to 10%). My most cpu intensive thing is my apache server and that only runs at 34% of my cpus maximum capacity, and thats only when i have my xbox network going.

and if you mean the window to boinc its fine. actually it gets rid of the 1% that the window uses. the project is running as long as the boinc emblum is in the taskbar where your clock and other processes are.

Reformatted my computer after deleting parts of windows. the os was fine but the apps wernt. calculator, note and word pads disk cleaner, defrager all down the drain. now instead of 10 sec per ts its 7.5 sec per ts, go figure.:]

i actually forgot to check this. it was a computer issue not a software one. i defrag every week on sunday but i installed the sims and sim city plus boinc 4.56.
the two games are very large and around two thrids of the color was red and the other 1\3ish was green with a tid bit of blue thrown in there. the only time i had seen a worse one was the family computer. i started taking care of it in october when it got a virus. it hadent been defraged since we got it in dec 2003=@_@=

> I don't have any problem to run BOINC with a dial-up connection but I have a
> secret. I'm using Browsegate 3 to control my
> phone line access. Browsegate is an all in one Firewall/DNS & DHCP
> server/NAT server/ HTTP proxy & it's free if your have less than 4
> computers on your home/personal network.
>
> You can configure it to dial automatically and disconnect the phone line after
> "X" minutes of inactivity. Ten minutes it's fine for me but you can reduce the
> time as needed. Very reliable.
>
> Browsegate is also designed to works with any TCP/IP internet connection (ADSL
> & cable modem).
>
>
>
how many machines do you have ive only got one. well actually ive got 4 but there not networked and boinc only runs on the inspirion 1100. will it still work

Posted 11 Sep 2004 by Profile old_user989
Post:
> Hi Roland,
>
> From your computer listing I see it's got 250MB memory and is running XP Home.
> The OS is likely to have a memory footprint of around 50MB, with CPDN under
> BOINC using about the same (more if you run up the visualisation).
>
> Something is eating up memory on the system. Run up task manager to find out
> the culprit.
>
> BTW, Windows out of the box has always had dynamic sizing of the paging file,
> but I've always found it runs much better with a fixed size (System Properties
> - Advanced - Performance Options - Change. Set the initial size to the same as
> the maximum and reboot the system).
>
250 megs of free space. thats probally my falt i told boinc that it could use up to 17 gigs of space so i left myeelf 1 gig and i used a bunch of it. but i am giong to max the page file. i dropped the project and im going to restart this when i join LHC

i was running ver 4.07 with windows xp service pack 1 and it had a cpdn unit and a bunch of s@h units on it. then i tried to use 4.08 and it didnt recognize my other units and loaded another cpdn unit and tried to get a bunch of S@H ones. it also became non responsive when ever you clicked a tab and it also started slowing down my computer horrendously. i degraded but in this case it was more of an upgrade to 4.07 again. i still have to get new wus though. is there anyway to get it to recognise the old wus since they are still on the machine in the projects folder. i had about 40 hrs into my cpdn unit.

im haveing the same problem but what happened is unbleiveable.
1: im starting the project and get all my files loaded.
2: runs for approx. 60hrs.
3: crashes when i turn on the graphics and messes up the files some how so i had to reload all them.
4:i get errs on every file except the WUs so i reset the project.
5:reset another 3 times
6: on 4th reset it gets every thing except the 4.29 meg file whitch got a checksum at 99.97 percent
7: have to settle for running gimps because i cant get work from any of the 5 boinc projects.
take to mind this is all on a dial up modem. but i will perservere and weather out the storm.
and as the sprite doll commerical guy says "show them my motto"

> carl,
> what you did got it to download all the other files but the 4.29 meg one
> screwed with the same mistake after loading to about 99.10 percent it had down
> loaded for about 2 hours. im trying it one more time. just to let you know
> this problem didnt hapen with seti if that helps.:)
>
>

it did it again it literally loaded to 99.97 percent then gave me this :

please help i really want to do somthing with science but since this is happenning, seti is down again, pirates dosent give anything, lhc filled its beta quota before i found out it existed and predictor is still on boinc 3.22. i guess ill support the oh so hated math and run gimps for a bit. this is my home page though so the second you give me info on how to fix this i will try to restart.
