21) Message boards : Number crunching : Excessive deferred communications (Message 7035)

I'm on vacation and have a bit of trouble getting connected to the internet when it's convenient for CPDN. Is there something I can change in one of the XML files that will tell CPDN it's ok to connect now intead of waiting for the full 4+ days it thinks is necessary?

Thanks!

"My sorry set of computers is finally reaching their first CPDN milestone. I am getting toward the end of my first WU on both of them. It's been 4 months. I'm getting excited and worried. The laptop overheats and crashes (sigh), but so far so good. I haven't lost very much. I back it up every so often. So far I haven't needed it. I'm hoping it will complete successfully"

I run Seti and CPDN on my Mac Powerbook 24/7 but have a little trick that seems to help prevent overheating. I place two wooden pencils on the desk and set the laptop on top of them when I don't need to carry it around. My laptop is my only work computer, and it has the external keyboard, mouse and monitor. The air gap underneath the laptop seems to help the air circulation and keep the laptop cooler. When I have to operate it resting flat on a table for a while, the bottom of the laptop and the table both get quite hot.

BTW, I started on September 2, and am halfway through phase 2 of my first WU. I complete a trickle about every 2.5 days.

It appears that CPDN is having some stats server problems - your problem may be part of this. This thread seems to indicate the problem, also. http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/forum_thread.php?id=1325

I'm not sure about PCs, as I have a Mac, but I think I read somewhere that if you don't have enough disk space on your hard drive, it will slow the CPDN down a lot...

&gt; CPDN saves its work every 144 timesteps (3 model days), no matter what. You
&gt; can get by this by checking "Leave applications in memory while pre-empted" in
&gt; your general preferences.
&gt;
Thanks, geophi! I went back and dug through the FAQ and and found the info about memory. When in doubt, read the manual

The FAQ page at says you need to be running Panther (OS 10.3.x) to run BOINC. I have my old 333mhz iMac setting here at home and it also has 10.2.8 - so I just use it to run seti@home classic.

I have seen this same type of message - usually when I am not connected to the internet. When the CPDN tries to connect to the internet to report progress and you are not connected, it defers connection time for one minute. It then tries again, defers for two minutes, etc., with progressively longer deferral times. About the only solution I've been able to come up with is to calculate when it will next try to connect, and make sure I am connected to the internet at that time.

Notice the last time step before benchmarking and the first one after; CPDN backed up 114 timesteps - around 15 minutes work on my computer. I see the same thing happening when it switches with S@H every hour. I\'ve tried resetting my switch times from 60 min to 66 min, but it doesn\'t seem to have taken effect yet.

29) Questions and Answers : Macintosh : Cannot get a model to run (Message 2942)

&gt; <P>Looks like the model failed right out of the gate. The messages do show
&gt; that it uploaded the failure results back. So in a little while your log
&gt; should show boinc downloading another model to run. My question is does the
&gt; new model run or does it fail in the same manner?</P>
&gt; <P>Also check the stderr_um.txt file for the failed model to see if it gave
&gt; any error messages. Should be in
&gt; /projects/climateprediction.net/1pmo_000100690/stderr_um.txt,
&gt; that might give a clue.</P>

&gt;

I am having the same problem also - my log file on terminal looks almost exactly like the one from drweaser. I had this problem earlier today, and just tryed again a few minutes ago. BOINC downloaded another set of data and tried three more times and then gave up again, so the new model fails also. I tried to find a stderr_um.txt file, but can't find one anywhere on my computer. I'm running a 1 GHz G4 Powerbook with 1GB ram and a 60GB hard drive with over 30GB available, using OS 10.3.5. Nothing else was running when I tried to run the model.

I read somewhere else in the formus that I should change the debt values in client_state.xml from 0.0000 to anything else. I tried it by changing them to 1.0000, but no improvement.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
