Andrew:
I just looked at your computer\'s results and saw that it exited with std error 255. The BOINC Wiki says that means it couldn\'t allocate a memory region. I also saw that you only have 256MB RAM in your computer. It may be that you don\'t have sufficient memory to run CPDN.

Yes, you should shift to the BOINC version of SETI - classic will be discontinued soon (month or two?). You can not successfully run SETI Classic and BOINC at the same time. Actually, they will run...but SETI Classic will steal all the CPU time and not release any to BOINC.

If you run the Standard GUI, then it (BOINC Manager) is all you'll need for control of everything. Personally, I use MenuBar (Simple GUI) and CLI, but most seem to like the BM version. And if you really want to crunch some numbers, go to the Team MacNN web site and download optimized clients. First however, go to the Team MacNN Forum web site and read up on installing the optimized clients. SETI BOINC, and Einstein@home both have optimized clients that let your Mac crunch around twice as fast as the standard client. In particular, look for posts by Shaktai, as he's posted several times about how to install the optimized clients.

What is telling you it is only using LT 1% of the CPU? The way I check this to to go to my Applications/Utilities folder and start up Activity Monitor. You'll be able to see the CPU usage here for each process in your computer. You can also go to your account preferences on this web site and make sure your settings look like this:

Do work while computer is running on batteries?
(matters only for portable computers) yes
Do work while computer is in use? yes
Do work only between the hours of (no restriction)
Leave applications in memory while preempted?
(suspended applications will consume swap space if 'yes') yes
Switch between applications every

Disconnect when done?

4) Questions and Answers : Macintosh : Insufficient work; requesting more (Message 15073)

You have to attach a project. Send the command ./boinc -help and boinc will give you the list of boinc commands that are available. One of these commands is -attach_project or something like that. To use, enter ./boinc -attach_project and press enter. Termiinal should come back and ask you for the URL of the project. Enter the URL from the email you were sent when you created your account. Terminal will then ask you for your account name (or something...). This is the long string of letters and numbers that looks like djt834mjg86jmfv94jm589gjfdji8fvj4e8f BOINC will now go to the project and download a work unit for you and then begin crunching it.

Word of caution: when you need to quit terminal, you use Control-C to stop boinc from running. Be careful when you do this, however, as it can cause loss of some of your calculations. CPDN will save to disk every 3 model days, beginning with 04 and next after 07, 10, 13, 16, etc. So look at the TS (tme step) that is showing in terminal. Just to the right of TSxxxxxxx you'll see the date as DD/MM/YYYY format, followed by the time in HH:MM format. You should wait until after 04/MM/YYYY 00:00 or after 07/MM/YYYY 00:00 etc. If you do quit at a different time, BOINC will restart from one of these times that it last saved.

Also, if you go to your account info on this web site and set you preferences to "leave in memory", you won't redo any calculations; otherwise, it will begin work again from the last saved time as mentioned in the paragraph above.

5) Message boards : Number crunching : \"should I change 4.10 Version to new one?\" (Message 14197)

Post:

> I have to use 4.43 on the Mac and there may be an issue there. all my models
> crash very quickly ... so, if you are using a Mac again you may want to wait.
> But I am not sure if this is a BOINC or CPDN problem. But since the Mac are
> low spot contributers I am not sure this is going to be cured anytime soon.
>

Paul: I'm running the Team MacNN "boinc_4.44_ppcG4superbench" on my 1 GHz PowerBook successfully. It takes about 4% less CPU time to complete a trickle, and the scheduler and pausing play nice with SETI, which is the only other project running on this machine. I'm running both as CLI versions from Terminal - I haven't tried running CPDN under MenuBar or BOINC Manager.

You can't change the size of the work units. I have a PowerBook 1 GHz G4 that takes around 3 months or so to do each CPDN work unit. The contact value in the prefs is really only meaningful if you also are running SETI, Einstein, Predictor, or one of the other clients that have a deadline time of a week or two, and the average WU takes from a couple hours to maybe a day.

I don't know if it's your problem or not, but did you repair disk permissions after installing the BOINC software? If you aren't familiar with this, go to Applications/Utilities and start up Disk Utility. Click on your hard drive icon when it shows up, then on the "Repair Permissions" button.

No guarantee this will solve the problem for you, but it might help. I'm running CPDN on my G4 PowerBook using the Team MacNN optimized BOINC 4.19 client, running in terminal mode. I think I remember reading somewhere that both 4.25 and 4.3x run SETI fine but have problems running CPDN. If you're running MenuBar, you probably have 4.25. To continue to run MenuBar, but switch to a stable (but optimized) client, take a look at this thread - scroll down to the post by mikkyo.

One way to check and see if you are actually calculating anything is to go to Applications/Utilities and open Activity Monitor. In the top right corner, pull down and select My Processes. You should be able to see the CPDN process calculating - it's probably called "hadsm..." and it should be using 90-95% of your CPU cycles, when nothing else is running.

If you are using Terminal to run CPDN, you should actually see the interim calculation results in the terminal window.

Early this morning, I hit the 194436 timestep in Phase 3, and it successfully trickled to the stats page. (I'm user 9662 in CPDN). When I got up this morning I had a notice from Mac's software update about a security upgrade. I waited until the CPDN model time reached day 22 at 0000 (around timestep 195408) and paused the run with Control-C. After installing Mac's updates, I rebooted, then restarted CPDN and it had some sort of problem:

Post:
I would suggest using a Control-C in Terminal instead of killing the process using Activity Monitor. I really don't have much to go on but gut feel for this, but stopping the process in Terminal may give it time to save something, or at least to not stop in the middle of a write to a file. I've only used the Activity Monitor kill when a process won't stop any other way - sort of like using the Command-Option-Escape. I could be totally wrong, too, so...

14) Questions and Answers : Macintosh : saving work (Message 8444)
Posted 2 Feb 2005 by old_user9662
Post:
If you have a few minutes leeway before you absolutely have to shut down, it's best to shut down right after certain time steps. For example,

1wv6_100110161 - PH 3 TS 024912 - 10/05/2052 00:00 - H:M:S=1236:44:37 AVG= 8.19 DLT= 3.65

Boinc resumes at step 00.00 of time steps beginning with the date 04, 07, 10, 13, 16, etc. In the example above, since it's time step is May 10th (10) and time 00:00, this is the line it would resume at, even if I shut down at

1wv6_100110161 - PH 3 TS 025045 - 12/05/2052 18:30 - H:M:S=1237:02:30 AVG= 8.19 DLT= 2.61

So, if I had a few extra seconds, I'd wait until the time step got to 13/05/2052 and time 00:00 before shutting down. Shutting down in between the times I mentioned doesn't hurt anything; BOINC just resumes farther back and you end up re-doing some calculations.

I'd suggest a minor change to this: Type chmod a+rx boinc_4.13_powerpc-apple-darwin
The "a" in "a+rx" means "all files" - what you will be doing is allowing BOINC to be able to write/change all the files in the CPDN folder.

I'd suggest not worrying about it, and just see what happens next time.
