1) Message boards : Number crunching : CPDN CPID not synching with other projects (Message 12420)

Could it just be displaying incorrectly on the CPDN account page? My CPID shows something different on CPDN's account page than what I have on other projects, but on the <a href="http://www.boincstats.com">BOINCstats</a> website if I search for my username, all of my projects show up correctly. If I open a detailed view on my CPDN stats, it shows the same CPID as all the other projects.

&gt; I wrote a little bit about this in another thread.

I think that is the thread that I was refering to which I read once upon a time. Sorry, couldn't remember who wrote it or I would have just pointed to it. Thanks.

&gt; You can also in the General Preferences change <b>Connect to network about
&gt; every x days</b> to zero days. Of course, you will not download nothing of
&gt; other projects if you have them.
&gt;

I seem to recall someone saying that setting to zero days may not work to prevent you from downloading. What they (sorry, forgot who) suggested, and I've tried it a few times with success, is to set the "Leave at least xxx GB disk space free" setting to something larger than your entire hard drive. I've tried it. It does not seem to adversely affect the existing work units and does prevent download of a new unit. But, keep in mind that what ever meathod you try, including this one, that you must do a project "update" to load the new setting to your client BEFORE it attempts to download new work.

BTW: As mentioned, this will also prevent downloading work for any other projects on this host, and the settings will migrate to those other projects and to any other host crunching them. So once your WU is finished, update the project once more to "report" it, then detach and change your settings in one of the projects that you're still attached to.

Dial-up issues are a known problem in BOINC, and unfortunately they seem to be a low priority for the developers. The Boinc client will not respect the connection preferences that you set on the project webpage.

There are a couple of things you can do.

1) When you're offline, set the BOINC client to "Disable BOINC Network Access" in the File menu. This will prevent the client from trying, and failing, to communicate with the server, and thus prevent the exponential backoff from ramping up. It will also keep it from attempting to dial your modem. NOTE: This setting is not presistant. If the client is restarted (ie. you reboot the computer) then network access will be enabled again.

2) When you go online, re-enable network access. The client will most likely try to connect right away if it needs to. (Assuming that the backoff time has elapsed.)

3) With network access enabled, if the client does try to connect automatically, or you want to manually force, then go to the client "Projects" tab, right-click on the project, and select "Update" from the pop-up menu. Repeat for any other projects you have.

[begin rant mode]
Why is this such a damn low priority for the developers? And why is this such a damn hard thing for them to get right? The old Seti Classic didn't have difficulties with dial-up. There are lots of programs out there, both professional and amateur that can automatically detect when the network is available, and either sleep or auto-dail if it's not. For example, every Instant Messaging program, many e-mail clients, time-sync deamons, etc.

Seriously, there's got to be lots of resources out there for code to deal with dial-up network connections like this. How much effort is really needed to fix this problem. It's been a known problem for at least 3 months.

And while I'm ranting.... how much effort would it really take to make the "Disable network access" setting presistant? There's alreay an INI file. There's already saved preferences for proxy settings. What would it take: about half an hour of coding to add this setting to the INI file? That would at least make life easier for modem users until they fix the network access problem.
[end rant mode]

Is the "execute" permission set? Try: chmod +x [boinc_filename]

Also try "ls -l" to check the permissions. It should look something like:
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root boinc 9458934 Sep 17 17:33 boinc_4.09_i686-pc-linux-gnu

&gt; Carl,

&gt; You are to quick on the draw.... just DL-ed 4.09 and it seems to be working
&gt; find. One other question. It 'only' runs in a shell (dos box type). Is there
&gt; not a 'windows' type version, or I doing something wrong.

Currently, Boinc only has a command-line version on Linux. :-(
But there are some third-party add-ons to allow you to view progress in the GUI. I haven't really investigated any of these yet, except for one that runs on Windows and will display the status of remote machines (running any OS).

This one is BoincView from boincveiw.amanheis.de

I'm not sure yet what is available as a GUI on Linux.

Yeah, that's very likely the correct runtime.

See: <a href="http://www.climateprediction.net/info/part_faq.php#q2.2">http://www.climateprediction.net/info/part_faq.php#q2.2</a>

and

<a href="http://www.climateprediction.net/info/tech_faq.php">http://www.climateprediction.net/info/tech_faq.php</a>

There are three phases each having 259248 timesteps, for a total of 777744 timesteps. How long each Ts takes depends on your CPU, OS, system load, etc.

My Athlon 1100MHz machine is running just under 8 seconds per Ts, that would mean over 1700 hours if running 24/7 with 100% Boinc resource share. And it will take longer now that I'm sharing some resources with LHC Project.

BTW: CPDN will generate a "trickle" message every 10802 timesteps, so you will see credit accumulating.

Seti has not yet updated their project to use BOINC 4.xx, and CP cannot use BOINC 3.xx. So, for now you will have to choose one project or the other, until the SETI project upgrades to the new client version.

There are a couple other preferences regulating the use of disk space. Check the "leave at least xx GB" and the "use no more than xx % of total space" options.
